Choose the shell as a complete garment for your activity and conditions: compare its intended use, weight, durability, fit, ventilation, construction and care instructions, then check product-specific waterproofness and breathability figures. A membrane name alone cannot tell you how the jacket will perform.
What are you comparing: a membrane or a complete shell?
A membrane is one part of a garment. The finished shell also has a fabric construction and garment details that affect how it wears, including fit, seams, closures and ventilation features. Two jackets carrying the same membrane brand can be designed for very different jobs; a brand name does not make their weight, durability or comfort identical.
GORE-TEX itself covers multiple product families and generations. For example, Outdoor Research’s 2024 announcement identifies GORE-TEX Paclite in its Foray II and Aspire II rainwear, while W. L. Gore & Associates announced a next-generation GORE-TEX Pro fabric category with an ePE membrane in 2025. Do not assume a GORE-TEX garment uses ePE simply because the brand has announced an ePE product.
Which shell characteristics matter most?
Intended activity and exposure
Start with how and where you will use the jacket. The product examples in manufacturer announcements span rugged-weather shells, lightweight running jackets, ski shells and rainwear. That range is a reminder that a shell intended for one use is not automatically the best choice for another. Look for the manufacturer’s stated activity and conditions, then compare garments meant for similar use.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Weight, durability and packability
These are garment-level trade-offs, not qualities you can reliably infer from the membrane label alone. Check the jacket’s stated weight and construction, and consider how much abrasion and repeated use it is designed to handle. A very light model may suit a different purpose from a shell positioned for rugged terrain; neither description establishes a universal winner.
Fit and ventilation
Check whether the fit works for the layers you expect to wear beneath the shell and whether the garment provides ventilation features suited to your activity. A “breathable” membrane claim does not by itself establish how comfortable a particular jacket will feel during exertion. Compare the actual garment design and, where possible, try the fit with your usual layers.

Construction and care
Compare the shell’s construction and details, including seam and closure design, rather than treating the membrane as the whole product. A durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment is not the same thing as a membrane; an announcement that mentions one does not establish the care needs of every garment using that technology. Follow the specific jacket’s care label and manufacturer instructions. Care directions can vary by model, so do not assume a wash temperature, heat treatment or reproofing product without checking.
How should you read waterproofness and breathability figures?
Read each number as a claim about a specific product, with its units and test context—not as a universal membrane ranking. Manufacturer announcements give figures for individual products, but the examples here do not establish that the products were tested using comparable protocols. A larger number in one release is not enough to prove that one jacket is better than another.

| Product example | What its announcement reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Houdini collaboration using Polartec Power Shield, 2023 announcement | A three-layer shell; 20,000 mm H2O and 20,000 g/m²/24h | Figures reported for this collaboration. The announcement does not establish a directly comparable test protocol with the La Sportiva example. |
| La Sportiva Ethereal Pro, Fall 2024 announcement | Pertex Shield; 20,000 mm waterproof rating; 5.5 oz stated weight | Figures reported for this jacket. The announcement does not establish a directly comparable test protocol with the Houdini collaboration. |
Before comparing numbers on two current product pages, check whether each figure is for the finished garment or a material, what units are used, and whether the manufacturers identify comparable test methods and conditions. If the methods are not stated or do not match, treat the figures as product claims rather than a head-to-head result.
What do the named membrane examples actually tell you?
GORE-TEX Pro ePE
W. L. Gore & Associates announced its next-generation GORE-TEX Pro fabric category on September 3, 2025, positioning it for severe weather and rugged terrain. Gore describes the membrane as expanded polyethylene (ePE) and says it is made without intentionally added per- and polyfluorinated substances. That chemical claim is specific to the announced membrane; it should not be extended to every component or treatment in a finished garment, or to earlier GORE-TEX products.

Gore also reported that current Pro laminates have a carbon-impact reduction “by as much as 39%” compared with the previous generation under the stated Materials Sustainability Index comparison. This is Gore’s qualified manufacturer claim about that comparison, not a general figure for all GORE-TEX products or all environmental impacts.
Other product families
- GORE-TEX ePE in a running jacket: A 2024 CONCURVE announcement describes an ePE membrane and the brand’s waterproof, windproof and breathable claims. Those are claims about that product, not a cross-brand comparison.
- Pertex Shield: La Sportiva’s Fall 2024 Ethereal Pro announcement reports a 20,000 mm waterproof rating and 5.5 oz weight for that jacket. The figures do not establish how it compares under a shared test protocol with another product.
- Polartec Power Shield: A 2023 Houdini collaboration announcement describes a three-layer shell and reports 20,000 mm H2O and 20,000 g/m²/24h. The announcement does not establish a universal ranking from these figures.
- Mammut Dry Expedition and Pertex Shield Air: Mammut’s 2024 ski collection announcement names these in different products, describing Dry Expedition as PFC-free and identifying a Pertex Shield Air shell. Treat the material and chemical claims as product-specific, not as interchangeable claims about every garment using either family.
- GORE-TEX Paclite and Stratoburst: Outdoor Research’s 2024 announcement identifies Paclite in Foray II and Aspire II rainwear. It separately describes Stratoburst products as free from intentionally added PFAS. Do not transfer that Stratoburst claim to Paclite or to other components.
- HDry: Its announcement describes a patented 3D process that laminates the membrane directly to the inner layer of shoes, gloves and backpacks. This is an example of a technology designed for particular product constructions, not a like-for-like apparel shell comparison.
How to choose between two jackets
- Match the use: Compare products intended for the same activity and similar weather exposure.
- Compare the garments: Check weight, construction, fit, ventilation and the manufacturer’s durability positioning. Do not substitute the membrane name for these details.
- Check the specifications: Record waterproofness and breathability figures with their units, stated test method and product context. If methods are missing or differ, do not treat the values as a direct ranking.
- Verify material claims: Check which exact product, component and generation a claim covers, especially for ePE or statements about intentionally added PFAS.
- Read care instructions: Use the specific garment’s label and manufacturer guidance rather than assuming all shells with a given membrane need the same treatment.
- Choose based on your priorities: Select the model whose activity match, fit, construction and verified product details best meet your needs; the membrane name alone does not settle the choice.
What is established—and what is not?
The announcements provide examples of different shell products and attributed manufacturer claims, but they do not establish a single independently tested ranking of GORE-TEX against other waterproof membranes. Nor do they establish universal waterproofness or breathability thresholds that determine whether a shell is right for you.

In 2026, W. L. Gore & Associates announced work toward a global outdoor-gear durability standard with Mid Sweden University’s Sports and Outdoor Research Centre, reporting more than 45 stakeholders. That participation count describes a project in progress; it is not evidence that a finished standard already exists or that a universal membrane comparison is available.
