For most people choosing between the two HERO5 cameras, the HERO5 Black is the more capable option: it adds a touchscreen, GPS, 12MP photos, RAW and WDR photo modes, and a removable battery. The HERO5 Session is smaller and simpler to operate, but its battery is integrated. Both HERO5 models were specified for 4K video at 30 frames per second and waterproofing to 33 feet (10 m) without a separate housing. The original HERO Session is a separate model, and the official sources cited here do not establish enough of its specifications for a reliable three-way comparison.

These are launch-era specifications, not a statement about current retail availability, prices, condition, or what a used-camera listing includes. GoPro’s October 2016 announcement is the source for the headline features and launch figures; its HERO5 Session user manual and HERO5 Black user manual provide model-specific operating details.
Which HERO5 is the better fit?
Choose HERO5 Black for framing, settings, and still photos
The Black’s 2-inch touchscreen makes it easier to frame shots and reach settings on the camera itself. GoPro also lists GPS, 12MP still photos, RAW and WDR photo modes, and a removable rechargeable battery. Those features make it the more flexible choice if you expect to compose photos on the camera or want to carry spare batteries.
Choose HERO5 Session for a smaller, simpler setup
The Session’s appeal is its compact body and simpler operation. That can suit a tight mount or a setup where you want fewer on-camera controls. Its trade-off is practical: the battery is integrated and cannot be removed, so you cannot swap in a charged spare during a shoot.

Do not decide on maximum video resolution alone
GoPro’s launch material specifies 4K at 30 fps for both HERO5 models. On the documented maximum video mode, neither has an advantage. The clearest documented differences are the Black’s screen, GPS, still-photo features and removable battery versus the Session’s compact design and simpler controls.
What the original HERO Session comparison can—and cannot—establish
The original HERO Session is not the same model as the HERO5 Session. In its 2016 announcement, GoPro said HERO5 Session retained the original Session’s small design and convenience while adding performance upgrades. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not a specification sheet for the original camera.

The official material cited here does not establish the original HERO Session’s exact video resolution, photo resolution, battery behavior, stabilization, or waterproofing. Those specifications therefore cannot be filled in by assuming the original matches the HERO5 Session. A detailed three-way comparison needs a model-specific original HERO Session source.
Waterproofing and setup details
GoPro described both HERO5 models as waterproof to 33 feet (10 m) without a separate housing. For HERO5 Session, the side door must stay closed; GoPro warns that the camera is not waterproof if that door is open or removed. Check that doors are fully closed before exposing either camera to water.

GoPro’s HERO5 Black product material lists a rechargeable battery, USB-C cable, mounting buckle, thumb screw, and adhesive mounts among the included items. Included accessories can vary on used listings, so confirm the specific seller’s contents. For the HERO5 Session, GoPro’s manual covers microSD-card insertion and advises checking supported cards; verify card compatibility against the relevant camera documentation rather than relying on a listing title.
Do not shop for a removable replacement battery for HERO5 Session: GoPro describes its battery as integrated and non-serviceable. For HERO5 Black, confirm exact model fit before buying a replacement battery.

What to check before buying either legacy camera
GoPro’s cited sources date from the models’ launch period and do not establish 2026 stock or market prices. Treat a present-day purchase as a legacy or used-camera decision and assess the actual listing, not just the model name.
