Google Reader, Inbox by Gmail, Google Play Music, and Google Podcasts all shut down—but each served a distinct habit that a successor did not necessarily preserve as a separate experience. Google cited declining use, product consolidation, or a migration to another service; the case that these apps should have stayed open is an editorial judgment, not a fact established by Google’s announcements.

Why these four Google app shutdowns still sting

These products were not interchangeable. Reader organized subscriptions into a feed, Inbox rethought email around prioritization and reminders, Play Music combined a personal music library with streaming, and Google Podcasts offered a dedicated place to follow shows. Google’s stated plans addressed product focus and migration, but a transfer path is not the same thing as preserving the original product’s workflow.

That distinction is the basis for calling these shutdowns regrettable: each service met a recognizable need, while the announcements documented closure and successor plans rather than proving that every valued part of the experience carried over.

1. Google Reader: the feed reader Google chose to retire

Why Google shut it down

Google announced on March 13, 2013, that Reader would close on July 1. Software Engineer Alan Green gave two reasons: declining usage and the company’s decision to focus its energy on fewer products. The official retirement announcement gave users about three and a half months to prepare.

What users lost and how they could leave

Reader’s central job was to gather subscriptions in one place. Google recommended Google Takeout so users could preserve their subscription data. The farewell notice said that data would be deleted from Google’s servers after the service closed. Exporting a list of subscriptions could help users carry their sources elsewhere, but it did not keep Reader itself running.

The regret is about the loss of a dedicated feed-reading service, not a claim that Google had no business reason to consolidate. A product can have declining usage and still be the daily tool a committed group depends on.

2. Inbox by Gmail: an email experiment folded into Gmail

Why Google ended Inbox

On September 12, 2018, Google announced that Inbox would close at the end of March 2019. Product Manager Matthew Izatt described it as an experimental place for ideas such as snoozing, Smart Reply, Nudges, and high-priority notifications. Google said popular Inbox experiences had been added to Gmail and pointed users to a transition guide. Messages were already available in Gmail, according to the Google Blog announcement.

What the transition preserved—and what it did not

Google’s rationale was that it would focus solely on Gmail, bringing useful Inbox ideas to a larger audience. That addressed feature availability, but not necessarily the value of Inbox as a distinct product with its own way of organizing email. Users who liked that separate experience lost it even if some familiar tools appeared in Gmail.

Inbox is therefore a particularly clear example of the difference between migrating features and maintaining a product. Google described the former; users who preferred the latter had no way to keep Inbox after its shutdown.

3. Google Play Music: a music library moved toward YouTube Music

What replaced Google Play Music

Google announced on August 4, 2020, that YouTube Music would replace Google Play Music by December 2020. The company offered a way to transfer music libraries, personal taste preferences, and playlists. Its transition announcement said service availability would end in stages: users in New Zealand and South Africa would lose access starting in September, with other global markets following in October.

What users could transfer

Google said playlists, uploads, purchases, and likes would be held through December to ease the transfer. Those measures gave users a defined window to move saved information, but the announcement does not establish that every Play Music feature or workflow was identical in YouTube Music. The strongest supported conclusion is that Google designated YouTube Music as the successor and provided a migration route for specified library data—not that the products were equivalent in every respect.

For people whose use centered on a personal collection and its saved history, replacing the service meant adapting to a new product rather than simply keeping the old one under another name.

4. Google Podcasts: a dedicated app redirected to YouTube Music

Google’s announced migration plan

In 2023, Google announced that Google Podcasts would stop in 2024 and that it would help listeners move their podcasts to YouTube Music. The plan included a migration tool and the ability to add RSS feeds in YouTube Music. Google also said listeners who preferred another platform could download an OPML file of their show subscriptions and import it into an app that supports OPML. These details appear in Google’s French-language announcement.

Why the closure mattered

A subscription export can help preserve a list of shows, and RSS-feed support provides a way to add podcasts in the designated successor. Neither step means the dedicated Podcasts app remained available. The announcement presented YouTube Music as Google’s destination while also acknowledging listeners who might choose another OPML-compatible app.

The case for keeping Google Podcasts is the appeal of a focused podcast experience. The available announcement explains Google’s transition options, but does not establish that the new destination reproduced every part of the old app’s experience.

What the four shutdowns have in common

App Closure and Google’s stated plan Migration or data option described Distinctive experience at stake
Google Reader Announced March 13, 2013; closed July 1. Google cited declining usage and a focus on fewer products. Google Takeout for subscription data. A dedicated feed reader for following subscriptions.
Inbox by Gmail Announced September 12, 2018; closed at the end of March 2019. Google said popular experiences had been added to Gmail. Messages were already available in Gmail; Google offered a transition guide. A distinct email product organized around experimental features and workflows.
Google Play Music Google announced August 4, 2020, that YouTube Music would replace it by December 2020, with availability ending in stages. Transfer for music libraries, taste preferences, playlists, uploads, purchases, and likes during the stated transition window. A music service tied to a personal library as well as listening.
Google Podcasts Google announced in 2023 that it would stop the app in 2024 and direct migration to YouTube Music. Migration tool and RSS feeds in YouTube Music; OPML export for import into a compatible app. A dedicated place to follow podcasts.

Across all four cases, Google described reasons to consolidate products or routes to a successor. Those announcements explain the company’s decisions and the data moves it offered; they do not demonstrate that users’ preferred workflows survived intact. That is why the regret is not simply about nostalgia: it is about losing a focused product even when some data or features had somewhere else to go.
