No—Google has not announced an end to Android sideloading. Its March 19, 2026 announcement describes an advanced flow that lets users install apps from unverified developers after extra checks and a one-day wait. ADB remains another route for installing modified or unverified apps on a device you control. The change is added friction, alongside developer identity verification, not a blanket ban.
What Google is changing—and what it is not
Google’s developer-verification policy is intended to establish who is responsible for an app. Google characterizes verification as an identity check, not a review of the app’s content. That distinction matters: these sources do not establish that Google will approve every app’s behavior or certify an app as safe.
In its March 19, 2026 announcement, Google said it was adding an “advanced flow” so power users can continue installing apps from unverified developers. The flow preserves user choice while making the decision harder to complete quickly. Google says its aim is to counter scams in which someone coaches a victim to bypass security warnings. The cited evidence explains Google’s rationale; it does not demonstrate that verification prevents scams.
For context, the Global Anti-Scam Alliance and Feedzai reported that 57% of adults surveyed across 42 markets had encountered a scam in the preceding 12 months and 23% had lost money. Those figures provide context for Google’s stated concern, not evidence of the policy’s effectiveness. Read the organizations’ October 2025 report.

How the advanced flow works for an unverified app
Google describes this as a one-time setup. After completing it, a user can choose to allow unverified app installs for seven days or indefinitely. The unverified-developer warning remains.
- Turn on developer mode in the device’s system settings.
- Confirm that nobody is coaching you through the process.
- Restart the device and reauthenticate.
- Wait one day.
- Return and confirm your identity with biometrics or the device PIN.
- Choose whether to permit unverified app installs for seven days or indefinitely.
The delay and checks are deliberate friction, especially against someone pressuring a user to act immediately. They do not remove the ability to proceed.

Other routes and who they are for
ADB for your own device
ADB remains available for developers and power users who build, test, or install modified or unverified apps on their own devices. It is a separate route from the consumer advanced flow; Google’s statement does not mean every installation method is affected identically. ADB is a developer tool, not a way to make an app verified.
Verified developers and app distribution
Google says verified developers can distribute directly through sideloading or through any app store they choose. Apps distributed outside Google Play, and any Play apps not automatically registered, can be registered manually through Play Console. Google says Play automatically registers 99% of apps; that is Google’s own reported figure, not an independent measurement. See Google’s developer-verification overview.

Small, closed groups
Google describes a free limited-distribution account for students, teachers, and hobbyists. It permits distribution to up to 20 devices without a government-issued ID or registration fee. It is meant for limited sharing, not unlimited public distribution.
Managed enterprise apps
Google says enterprise apps distributed through an organization’s store on managed devices do not need to complete these verification requirements. It recommends registration if an app may also be distributed outside that managed environment.

Where the first phase applies—and where Google’s pages differ
Google’s current pages describe an initial rollout in selected Southeast Asian markets and Brazil on certified Android devices, with broader expansion planned in 2027. The initial phase is limited to participating stores; Google’s Android Help page lists Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Galaxy Store, Palm Store, V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. This is not a claim that the first phase applies globally or to every Android device.
Google’s official pages do not agree on all rollout boundaries. Android Help says the first phase starts in September 2026, applies in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, and covers certified devices running Android 8 and up. Developer Console Help instead says protections go live September 30, 2026 in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, omitting Brazil; the developer overview describes a September 30 start across the four named markets on certified devices running Android 7 and up. Check Google’s live pages for the applicable market and device requirements as rollout approaches rather than assuming these differences are resolved.

Google says AOSP and non-certified devices are exempt, as are regions where Google Mobile Services are unsupported and territories subject to applicable trade sanctions. Android Help’s rollout and user guidance and Developer Console Help’s verification guidance describe the details.
