Google Workspace add-ons integrate with supported Google apps such as Gmail or Docs; Chrome extensions add features to the Chrome browser and its web context. Choose based on where you need the tool to work. An add-on can appear while you use Workspace in Chrome, but that does not make it a Chrome extension.
How Google Workspace add-ons and Chrome extensions differ
The key difference is the environment each one extends. A Workspace add-on is designed for supported Google Workspace apps and their workflows. A Chrome extension runs in Chrome and can interact with browser features or websites, depending on what it does and the permissions it receives.

Choose by where the work needs to happen
Choose a Workspace add-on for an in-app workflow
Start with an add-on when the action should be available inside a supported Workspace app—for example, alongside a Gmail or Calendar workflow, or while working in Docs, Sheets, or Slides. Confirm that the specific add-on supports the exact host and context you need; support is not universal across every Workspace app or feature. Google’s add-ons overview
Choose a Chrome extension for browser-wide behavior
Look at a Chrome extension when you need a feature that operates on websites or uses Chrome browser functionality, rather than an action embedded in a particular Workspace app. Review the extension’s permission request and install only extensions you trust. For Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms, check the add-on type
Google has a separate category called Editor add-ons. These target individual editors and can provide editor-specific menus, dialogs, and sidebars. They are not the same thing as Workspace add-ons, so check which type a tool uses before expecting a particular interface or host support. Google’s add-on types guide
What to check before installing
- Host and context: Identify the exact app, website, or browser feature where you need the tool. For a Workspace add-on, verify both the host and the particular interaction.
- Permissions: An add-on asks for authorization to access the services it needs; its authorization card explains the requested access. A connection to a third-party service may require separate authorization for that service. Chrome extensions declare permissions for APIs or features, which you should review before approving. - Mobile use: Do not assume that a desktop feature carries over to a phone. Workspace add-ons are largely desktop-oriented, with some contextual Gmail mobile support; other mobile surfaces are limited. The cited Chrome instructions explain installing extensions in desktop Chrome and adding one from a phone to desktop Chrome, not running the same extension functionality in mobile Chrome. - Work or school account: Your administrator may control which Workspace add-ons or Chrome extensions can be installed, or may deploy approved tools centrally. Workspace add-on limitations that can affect your choice
Workspace add-ons use card-based interfaces and are intended to enhance Workspace rather than change or restrict its core features. Google’s restrictions documentation also notes that they cannot use Apps Script simple triggers, cannot generally detect user activity outside their own scope, and do not yet support document context in editors. Their support is desktop-oriented, with contextual Gmail mobile support as a qualification. Are Workspace add-ons the same as Chrome extensions?
No. They can both be useful while you work in a Chrome browser, but they extend different environments: Workspace add-ons integrate into supported Google apps, while Chrome extensions extend Chrome. A Workspace add-on is not a Chrome extension simply because you open Gmail or Docs in Chrome.
