Google has publicly announced a pilot partnership with websites whose content helps ground generative AI responses, while press reports describe a separate or related test that pays publishers when their material contributes to AI search answers. Google has not published the reported payment test’s terms, so it is not possible to say who qualifies, how much a publisher can expect, or whether the payments compensate for lost visits.
What Google has announced—and what publishers have reportedly been paid
In a June 18, 2026 public policy statement, Google said: “Beyond news, we are piloting a new way to partner with websites whose content meaningfully contributes to the freshness and factuality of generative AI responses through the process of grounding.” The statement describes an announced partnership pilot, but does not provide payment rates or establish that it is the same program described in press reports.
The Information reported that Google is paying about 100 digital publishers for contributions to AI Overviews. Ars Technica’s September 30, 2026 report, citing The Information, said the pilot pays when content materially contributes to Gemini-powered search results, including an AI Overview. Because the accessible Information report was subscription-limited and Google has not published the test’s full terms, these details remain attributed reporting rather than a public program specification.
What the reported payment figures do—and do not—show
Ars Technica relayed several examples from The Information. They indicate that reported earnings vary substantially; they do not establish a standard rate or predict what another publisher would receive.

| Reported example | What it represents | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 100 publishers | Reported scale of the payment test | The Information, as relayed by Ars Technica in 2026 |
| More than $1 million a year | One early participant’s reported run rate | The Information, as relayed by Ars Technica; an individual example, not a typical payout |
| $50,000–$60,000 | Reported earnings for a more recent participant | The Information, as relayed by Ars Technica; no general rate or period-wide formula is stated here |
| Less than $1,000 over several months | Reported earnings for some smaller sites | The Information, as relayed by Ars Technica; not a benchmark for all small publishers |
The reports do not establish a published calculation method, eligibility rules, participant list, or enrollment process. They also do not show that payments are based on clicks lost, or that the program makes a publisher whole for any decline in traffic.
Why publishers are watching AI search referrals
An AI-generated answer can satisfy a searcher without a visit to the source website. For publishers that depend on organic search, fewer click-throughs can mean fewer page views and ad impressions, potentially weakening advertising revenue. BuzzFeed identified that risk in its 2025 annual report; it is a company risk disclosure, not evidence of a universal or measured market-wide loss.

No independent, representative figure establishes how much traffic or revenue publishers overall have lost to AI search. The effect can differ by site, topic, query, and the way search features present sources, so a single percentage should not be treated as a general result.
How publishers can assess visibility and referral value
Search Console insights
Google says it is rolling out Search Console insights about how pages appear in generative AI Search features. Google Search Central also published a guide for site owners, SEOs, and developers on optimizing content for generative AI features in Search on May 15, 2026. The existence of the guide does not mean a particular tactic guarantees inclusion, visits, or payment.

Referral attribution and on-site analytics
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s final publisher decision says Google should provide referral information indicating whether a visit came from a search generative AI feature or another part of general search. Publishers can combine that information with their own on-site analytics to examine the quality of referrals, rather than treating visibility or referral counts alone as the full value of an AI feature.
The CMA wrote: “Publishers need to understand the value of traffic referred from search generative AI features to make an effective choice over the use of their Search Content.” Google argued that aggregated metrics can offer more stable insights as AI Overviews and AI Mode become a more unified experience. The CMA concluded that publishers need referral information to exercise controls effectively. These are the regulator’s and Google’s respective positions, not a settled claim that one reporting approach answers every publisher’s needs.

How this differs from Google’s other publisher arrangements and controls
Google’s public policy statement also describes established publisher programs and the Google-Extended control. They should not be treated as the reported payment test: the programs have different stated purposes, and Google-Extended’s described scope is not a blanket opt-out from every use of content in Search AI features.
| Arrangement or control | What the cited source says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Reported AI contribution payment test | Press reports describe payments when publisher content materially contributes to AI-powered search answers. | Official eligibility, payment formula, enrollment, or a link to traffic losses. |
| Extended News Previews | Google reported more than 5,500 European publications in the program in 2026. | That participants are part of the reported AI contribution payment test. |
| Google News Showcase | Google reported more than 2,800 partners in 33 countries in 2026. | That Showcase participation is equivalent to payment for grounding content in AI Search. |
| Google-Extended | Google describes it as a control for use of content to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and the Vertex API. | Control over every use of publisher content in Search AI features. |
The European publication and News Showcase figures are Google’s 2026 counts for those existing programs, not counts of participants in the reported payment test. The CMA decision separately discusses controls for Search generative AI features and the need for reporting that lets publishers make informed choices.

What remains unresolved for publishers
- Which sites qualify, how they are selected, and whether publishers can apply.
- How Google determines that content materially contributed to an answer and calculates any payment.
- Whether compensation is recurring, how long the test will run, and whether the terms differ by publisher.
- Whether payment amounts are connected to referral performance or intended to offset any reduction in visits or revenue.
- How much feature-specific reporting publishers will receive and how consistently it will distinguish AI Search referrals from other search visits.
Until those points are publicly documented, publishers should treat reported sums as individual examples, not a forecast or a replacement for measuring their own traffic and revenue. The available evidence supports the existence of Google’s announced grounding partnership pilot and press reports of a payment test, but does not publicly settle whether they are the same initiative or how the reported payments work.
