No: Google has not announced that it is ending support for all ChromeOS devices early. Its administrator FAQ, last updated September 23, 2026, says ChromeOS devices will receive updates and security patches through mid-2034. That platform-wide horizon is separate from each Chromebook’s own Auto Update Expiration (AUE), which determines how long that model receives updates.
Is Google ending ChromeOS support?
Google says it will maintain support for current Chromebooks running ChromeOS through each device’s supported lifetime. Its FAQ states, “ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034.” The mid-2034 date describes Google’s stated platform horizon; it does not mean every Chromebook receives updates until then, nor that every owner must replace a device in 2034.
For an individual Chromebook, the published AUE date is the key date. If that date is still in the future, Google says the device continues to receive updates through its supported lifetime. A device’s AUE can arrive before the broader ChromeOS horizon.
How long will your Chromebook get updates?
Google’s current Auto Update policy provides 10 years of updates measured from the platform release date—not from the day an individual buyer purchases the Chromebook. Google says models released in 2021 or later get 10 years of updates. Some pre-2021 devices that receive extended updates may not have access to every feature or service.

Find the AUE in Chromebook settings
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Open Additional details.
- Look under Update schedule for the device’s update information.
You can also look up the exact model in Google’s Auto Update policy table. Check the model name carefully: a product family may include variants with different support dates.
What happens when a Chromebook reaches AUE?
A Chromebook can still be used after its AUE, but Google says it will no longer receive automatic software and security updates. That means it will not receive the ongoing protections and fixes delivered through those updates. Google lists getting a newer Chromebook as one possible option. If the device is managed by a school or employer, Google advises asking the administrator about the device and its support.

Could your Chromebook move to Googlebook OS?
Google says many of its newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS, and that many may have direct migration paths. However, Google has not yet published the eligible model list or detailed migration instructions. Eligibility and a direct path are not guaranteed for every Chromebook, so do not base a purchase or replacement decision on an assumed migration.
What schools and businesses should plan for
Google’s initial 2026 Googlebook launch is for personal consumer use; it does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. Google says comprehensive Googlebook management will begin rolling out in the second half of 2027. Institutions should account for that timing rather than treating Googlebook as a ready replacement for centrally managed Chromebook fleets.

For current fleets, Google says existing Chrome Enterprise and Education upgrade licenses remain supported for managing Chromebooks through each device’s lifecycle. Google has said new Googlebooks will use a new licensing structure, but has not yet provided its details.
Practical fleet-planning steps
- Inventory the exact Chromebook models in use and record each model’s AUE.
- Review refresh plans against those device-specific dates and the work or school tasks each model must support.
- Check existing Chrome Enterprise or Education management commitments against the expected lifecycle of the fleet.
- Do not schedule procurement around Googlebook migration until Google publishes model eligibility, migration paths, and relevant management and licensing details.
How to decide whether to replace your Chromebook
If your Chromebook is before its AUE, its update support continues through that listed date under Google’s policy; the mid-2034 platform horizon alone is not a reason to replace it. If the AUE has passed, weigh continued use without automatic software and security updates against your needs and risk tolerance. If you are buying a replacement, compare the exact model’s AUE and remaining update period, not just its purchase date, and choose a model suitable for your work or school use.
