Google announced OSV-SCALIBR on January 16, 2025: an extensible, primarily Go-based library for software inventory extraction, vulnerability detection, and file-system scanning. Developers can integrate the library and customize its plugins; users who want a command-line workflow can use OSV-Scanner, though the official repository cautions that the CLI does not expose every OSV-SCALIBR capability.

What OSV-SCALIBR does

OSV-SCALIBR stands for Software Composition Analysis LIBRary. Software composition analysis (SCA) identifies software components in a codebase, system, or artifact and checks them for known vulnerabilities. The project provides an extensible engine for extracting software inventory and performing related scans, rather than a standalone commercial scanning service.

Google’s January 2025 launch post described scanning installed packages, standalone binaries, and source code. It also listed operating-system package scanning for Linux distributions including COS, Debian, Ubuntu, and RHEL, as well as Windows and Mac; artifact and lockfile scanning across ecosystems such as Go, Java, JavaScript, Python, and Ruby; weak-credential detection; SPDX and CycloneDX SBOM generation; and on-host scanning designed for constrained resources. These are capabilities Google reported at launch, not independent test results for every environment or feature. Google Security Blog, January 16, 2025.

The repository’s current description also lists container analysis with layer-based extraction and guided remediation for transitive vulnerabilities. It describes the tool as a file-system scanner that can extract an inventory, detect known vulnerabilities, and generate software bills of materials (SBOMs). Because implementation and supported features can change, consult the official repository for current details.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How it relates to OSV-Scanner

OSV-SCALIBR is the underlying library; OSV-Scanner is a command-line option for running scans. The repository documents both using OSV-Scanner and using OSV-SCALIBR through a custom wrapper, but warns that not all library functionality is available through OSV-Scanner. Choose the CLI for a simpler command-line workflow when it supports the scan you need; use the library when you need to configure or extend the scanning flow.

Adoption route Best suited to What to know
OSV-Scanner CLI Users who want a command-line scanning workflow The repository says the CLI does not expose every OSV-SCALIBR capability; verify that it supports the feature and target you need.
Go library Developers integrating scans into a Go application or service Import github.com/google/osv-scalibr and configure ScanConfig; the library permits custom plugins.
scalibr wrapper binary Users who want a wrapper-based route, including custom scan scenarios The repository documents installing the wrapper with Go. Check its current documentation for installation and usage instructions.

How to use the project

The official repository documents three software-based routes. Exact installation commands and available options may change, so use the repository’s current instructions rather than relying on a copied command from an older guide.

  1. For a CLI scan: use OSV-Scanner and confirm in its current documentation that the required scan type and feature are available.
  2. For integration in Go: import github.com/google/osv-scalibr into your project and configure a ScanConfig for the scan you intend to run.
  3. For the wrapper: install the scalibr wrapper binary with Go, following the repository’s current installation steps.
  4. For customization: use the library’s plugin model when you need to add custom extraction or scanning behavior.

The repository includes an SPDX v2.3 output example. If an SBOM is part of your workflow, check the current documentation for supported formats and the precise options for your chosen route.

What to check before adopting it

  • Target and platform: support depends on the plugin and workflow. The repository says its documented container-image scanning is limited to Linux-based images; verify current constraints for your target.
  • Feature exposure: determine whether OSV-Scanner offers the capability you need or whether you must use the underlying library.
  • Output: confirm the SBOM format and scan results meet your integration requirements.
  • Evidence: Google said at launch that OSV-SCALIBR was its primary SCA engine for live hosts, code repositories, and containers inside Google, and that it had been used and tested across internal products and tools. This is Google’s account of internal use, not an independent benchmark or public customer case study. The cited official materials do not provide an independently attributed performance benchmark or adoption total.

Google also announced that OSV-Scanner supported 11 programming languages and 20 package-manager formats at that time. Those figures refer to OSV-Scanner in the January 16, 2025 announcement; they are not a count of OSV-SCALIBR’s supported ecosystems. Google Security Blog, January 16, 2025.
