Magika is Google’s open-source tool for predicting a file’s content type from the file data, rather than relying only on its name or extension. Version 1.0 is the project’s first stable release, with a Rust-based engine and command-line tool, support for more than 200 content types, and refreshed Python and TypeScript integrations. It can help route files to appropriate parsers or security scanners—but a type prediction is not a malware verdict.
What changed in Magika 1.0?
Google’s Open Source Blog announced Magika 1.0 as the project’s first stable version after its earlier open-source release. The announcement says the supported set grew to more than 200 content types, doubling the initial release’s count. It also highlights an engine rewritten in Rust, a native Rust CLI, better coverage for text-based formats such as code and configuration files, and updated Python and TypeScript modules. The announcement describes speed improvements but does not provide a reproducible benchmark setup for that comparison. Google Open Source Blog
What is Magika, and how does it identify file types?
Magika analyzes file content and predicts what kind of data the file contains. This is useful when an extension, MIME type, metadata, or familiar file signature is absent or misleading. Content-type detection has applications in operating systems, development tools, reverse engineering, security products, browsers, and media players, according to the Magika research paper.
The project describes Magika as using a compact, custom deep-learning model that reads a limited portion of a file and performs inference in milliseconds on a CPU. The repository reports a training and evaluation corpus of roughly 100 million samples across more than 200 content types, and approximately 99% average accuracy on its test set. These are project-reported figures, not independently established comparative results. The repository also reports about 5 ms per file after model loading on a single CPU; actual latency can vary with hardware, file mix, and version. Google Magika repository

Magika applies thresholds for individual content types. When confidence in a specific label is insufficient, it may return a broader result such as “Generic text document” or “Unknown binary data.” Prediction modes let a caller trade tolerance for specificity, so interpret the returned label in light of its score, selected mode, and intended downstream action. The project documents this behavior in its repository.
Which file types and interfaces does Magika support?
The documented standard_v3_3 model supports more than 200 content types. That count applies to a particular model version: the project’s broader knowledge base of content types is not identical to the set supported by any one model. For the authoritative label list, consult the selected model’s README. Examples listed for standard_v3_3 include Adobe Illustrator artwork, Chrome extensions, Rich Text Format, and JAR files. - Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
The project documents a Rust CLI and Python API, as well as Rust, JavaScript/TypeScript, and Go bindings. The repository describes JavaScript/TypeScript as experimental and Go support as work in progress; maturity and model coverage should not be assumed to be identical across interfaces. For a directory tree, the CLI supports recursive scanning:
magika -r path/to/directory
Use the CLI’s help output and the current quick-start guide to check exact options for the installed version. Documented output choices include labels, MIME types, scores, JSON, JSON Lines, and custom formats. These options make it possible to integrate classification into scripts or pipelines without treating the result as a security decision. Magika quick start

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where does Magika fit in a file-handling workflow?
A practical use is to classify a file before selecting a parser, renderer, or scanner. For example, a service can use the predicted type to route a document to a suitable content-policy or security scanner rather than trusting the filename alone. The Magika project says it is used to route files in Gmail, Drive, and Safe Browsing to security and content-policy scanners, and cites VirusTotal and abuse.ch integrations. Those are project-reported deployment examples, not independent measurements of adoption. Google Magika repository The research paper also discusses use in scanning and analysis settings. Magika’s output answers “what type of content is this likely to be?” It does not establish that a file is safe, malicious, authentic, or harmless to open. Treat it as one signal in a workflow, then apply the appropriate validation, sandboxing, or security scanning before taking consequential action.
What are Magika’s limitations?
Magika does not claim to cover every possible format. The project’s FAQ explains why the supported set is bounded, and supported labels can vary by model version. Verify the chosen model’s own label list rather than assuming every type in the broader knowledge base is available. Magika FAQ
The project’s known-limitations documentation says the initial release did not target polyglot detection—files deliberately constructed to behave as more than one format. Do not treat a single predicted type as resolving that case or as a guarantee that all adversarial files will be correctly characterized. Magika known limitations
If you are evaluating Magika against another identification approach, compare label coverage and granularity, handling of text and binary formats, results on a clearly described test set, latency and runtime overhead, supported operating systems and languages, threshold and fallback behavior, update cadence, and the role of type detection in the larger security pipeline. The cited project materials do not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark.
