Google Play Services for AR is an Android background service that provides ARCore features to compatible apps. It is not a separate device or an app you open to create augmented-reality content: apps use it to track movement, understand the surroundings and place virtual objects in the camera view.

What Google Play Services for AR does

Google stores AR features in this service rather than requiring each app to bundle them. An app built with the ARCore SDK communicates with the service, which Google updates separately through Google Play. Google’s ARCore setup documentation describes this separate update model.

ARCore provides three core capabilities:

  • Motion tracking: estimates how the phone moves through space.
  • Environmental understanding: helps an app recognize surfaces and the surrounding environment.
  • Light estimation: estimates lighting conditions so virtual content can appear more naturally in the camera view.

The service supplies the underlying AR functionality; the app determines what experience to present.

Why an app may ask you to install or update it

Whether installation happens automatically depends on how the app handles AR. Google distinguishes between AR Required and AR Optional apps in its Google Play AR app guidance.

App type How it works When the service is installed or requested
AR Required The app cannot function without ARCore. Google Play makes it available only on supported devices. Google Play automatically installs or updates the service when the app is installed or updated. The app can still prompt you later if the service is missing or out of date.
AR Optional The app has useful non-AR features and can run without ARCore. Google Play does not automatically install or update the service for this app. The app checks support and may request installation when you open an AR feature.

An app may therefore install successfully but ask for Google Play Services for AR later. The service could be outdated or may have been manually uninstalled; apps check its state at runtime and can request installation or an update when needed.

Does your Android phone support it?

Not every Android phone supports ARCore. Google’s supported-device list is the place to check your exact model; eligibility and capability notes can differ by device. Google says listed Android (Google Play) devices must have originally shipped with the Google Play Store and meet the Android version requirement shown for that model. If no Android version is listed for a model, Google specifies Android 7.0 or later.

Meeting an Android version minimum does not by itself make a phone supported. Google’s certification process evaluates device characteristics such as the camera, sensors, design and CPU performance, and certified devices can have device-specific ARCore profiles. See Google’s device certification information for how device compatibility is assessed.

What to do when an AR app reports a problem

  1. Check the exact phone model. Look it up in Google’s live supported-device list; do not rely only on the phone’s Android version.
  2. Follow the app’s prompt. If it asks to install or update Google Play Services for AR, use the offered Google Play flow. AR Optional apps may only make this request when you enter an AR feature.
  3. If the prompt returns, consider the service state. The app may be detecting an outdated or removed service and checking again at runtime. Availability also depends on the device being supported.

Privacy and regional context

AR features use the camera and device sensing to understand movement and surroundings. Google requires ARCore apps to follow its User Privacy Requirements; an app’s camera access and handling of data are also matters to review in that app’s own permission and privacy information.

This explanation concerns the Android service distributed through Google Play. Google documents a separate China distribution context in which supported devices may obtain the service through local app stores. Its supported-device materials also mention iOS devices for some ARCore experiences, but that does not make Google Play Services for AR an iOS service.
