“Google Places MCP Server” is not one canonical product. The name most often points to the community colakang/google-places-mcp repository, which exposes a Google Places text-search tool. Google’s official Maps MCP endpoint is a different service: it retrieves Google Maps Platform documentation and code samples rather than searching businesses or returning place records. Choose the server that matches that distinction before configuring your MCP client.
What the name “Google Places MCP Server” actually refers to
Two implementations are easy to confuse:

The connection reference does not show a user-supplied Places API key |
They are not interchangeable. Connecting the official endpoint will not give an agent a “find coffee shops near me” operation. Connecting the community server will not give an agent Google’s documentation-retrieval tools.
Which server should you use?
Use the community server for Places text search
Choose colakang/google-places-mcp when your MCP client needs to submit a natural-language or keyword query and receive matching place data from Google Places. Its documented tool is places-text-search. The README lists filters for included place type, language, location bias or restriction, page size, price levels, rating, open-now status, and a requested field list.
The same README marks nearby search, place details, and place photos as “Coming Soon.” Treat those as unavailable unless the particular release you install documents them as implemented. Do not configure an agent around those operations based only on the roadmap.

Use Google’s hosted MCP for Maps documentation
Use Google’s hosted server when an agent needs authoritative explanations, API guidance, or code samples for Google Maps Platform. The endpoint is https://mapscodeassist.googleapis.com/mcp. Its documented sequence starts with retrieve-instructions; call or load that instruction tool before invoking retrieve-google-maps-platform-docs, as required by Google’s reference.
This is a remote documentation assistant, not a Places search wrapper. It does not turn an MCP client into a business directory or geocoder.
Do not reuse another Maps repository’s tool list
Projects such as david-pivonka/google-maps-mcp-server describe broader combinations of Places, Routes, Geocoding, and utility APIs. Their names and setup are separate from the exact-title repository. Features documented there should not be presented as features of colakang/google-places-mcp.
Requirements for the community Google Places server
- An MCP client that supports the transport you intend to use (stdio or SSE).
- A Google Cloud project with a billing account attached.
- Places API enabled for that project.
- A Google Maps API key supplied to the server through
GOOGLE_MAPS_API_KEY. - An API-key restriction policy appropriate to your deployment. Google strongly recommends restricting keys rather than leaving them unrestricted.
Google’s setup guidance explains that Places API access requires a Cloud project, billing, API enablement, and authentication with an API key or OAuth. Charges are associated with the Cloud project and depend on current Google Maps Platform terms; check Google’s pricing and billing pages for the region and API edition you will use. No fixed price should be assumed from the MCP repository README.

How to connect the community server to an MCP client
1. Create and secure the Google credential
- In Google Cloud, create or select the project that will own the Maps usage.
- Attach a billing account.
- Enable Places API for that project.
- Create an API key and restrict it to the applications, IP ranges, or APIs that fit your deployment. Keep the key in an environment variable or secret manager; do not paste it into a shared prompt, repository, or client configuration committed to source control.
The repository documents the variable name GOOGLE_MAPS_API_KEY. Set it in the environment visible to the MCP server process. The exact package-install and launch command can change with the repository release, so use the current README and pin a reviewed commit or release in production rather than copying an old command from a blog post.
2. Select stdio or SSE
- stdio: the MCP client starts the server as a local child process and exchanges messages over standard input and output. This is usually the simplest choice for a desktop client on the same machine.
- SSE: the server listens on a network endpoint. The repository documents port
3000as the default SSE port. Bind and firewall that port deliberately, and place authentication and TLS in front of it if it is reachable beyond localhost.
Because the repository’s launch command and client configuration keys are release-specific, copy those names from its current README rather than guessing a command. The stable parts are the transport choice, the GOOGLE_MAPS_API_KEY environment variable, and the default SSE port documented above.
3. Verify the tool before building an agent workflow
- Connect your MCP client to the server using the repository’s current stdio or SSE instructions.
- Inspect the advertised tool list and confirm that
places-text-searchis present. - Run a small query with a narrow page size and a field list containing only what your application needs.
- Check the returned place data and the Google Cloud project’s usage records before moving to production traffic.
If the client shows no tools, the process may have exited, the transport may not match the client, or the client may be pointing at a different MCP endpoint. Check process logs and the client’s connection diagnostics before changing API settings.
Using places-text-search effectively
The documented search accepts a text query plus optional constraints. A practical request normally combines a descriptive query with geography and result-shaping parameters:

- Included type: narrow results to a supported place type.
- Language: request localized text where supported.
- Location bias or restriction: influence or constrain the geographic area. Use a restriction when results must stay inside a boundary; use a bias when nearby relevance is preferred but not absolute.
- Page size: cap the number of results returned to control latency and downstream processing.
- Price levels and rating: filter commercial results when those attributes are relevant.
- Open now: request currently open places when the use case is time-sensitive.
- Field list: ask only for fields your agent needs. This reduces payload size and makes downstream parsing more predictable.
Exact parameter spelling and accepted enum values belong to the server release you install. Inspect the tool schema exposed during MCP initialization and validate values there; do not assume that a parameter from another Google Maps MCP project is supported by this one.
Connecting Google’s official Maps Code Assist MCP
For documentation questions, configure your MCP client with the hosted endpoint:
https://mapscodeassist.googleapis.com/mcpFollow the current Google reference for your client’s remote-MCP configuration format. Once connected, call retrieve-instructions first, then use retrieve-google-maps-platform-docs for documentation and code-sample retrieval. This route is hosted by Google and is conceptually different from running a local Places-search process: the reference connection does not document a user-supplied GOOGLE_MAPS_API_KEY for that endpoint.
Google’s platform-ai README says the npm distribution of Google Maps Platform Code Assist is deprecated and would no longer be available after July 1, 2026. That date has passed, so do not start a new integration with an old npm installation route. Prefer the securely hosted remote MCP described in Google’s current documentation.

Common failures and fixes
“API key not valid” or permission errors
Confirm that the key belongs to the project with billing enabled, Places API is enabled there, and the key’s restrictions allow the server’s origin. A key restricted to browser referrers will not necessarily work for a server process. Create a server-appropriate restriction instead of removing restrictions entirely.
The client connects but no Places tool appears
Verify that you connected to the community repository for search, not Google’s documentation endpoint. Then inspect the server’s advertised tools and logs. A version mismatch, failed startup, or an SSE URL pointing at the wrong port can all produce an apparently successful but tool-less client entry.
SSE connection refused
Check whether the process is listening on the documented default port 3000, whether another process already owns it, and whether a firewall or container network prevents access. If you expose SSE outside localhost, add TLS and an authentication layer rather than making an unauthenticated port public.
Results are too broad or geographically wrong
Make the text query explicit, add an included type, and use location restriction when results must remain inside a defined area. Set language and a modest page size, then request a deliberate field list. Do not expect nearby search semantics from the repository’s text-search tool; nearby search is marked “Coming Soon” in the documented README.

Place details or photos are unavailable
That behavior is consistent with the repository documentation, which marks details and photos as planned rather than currently available. You would need a release that documents those tools or a different Maps MCP implementation; do not silently substitute another project’s tool names.
Operational, cost, and security considerations
- Billing: every Places request is associated with your Google Cloud project. Review current Google Maps Platform usage and billing terms before setting an automated agent loose on broad queries.
- Quota and retries: bound page size, avoid duplicate prompts, and implement bounded retries with backoff in the calling application. MCP itself does not remove Google API quotas.
- Key handling: use environment variables or a secret manager, rotate keys, and restrict them. Never log full authorization values.
- Data minimization: request only required fields and avoid sending unnecessary returned data into long-lived agent transcripts.
- Version drift: a GitHub README can describe a moving target. Pin a reviewed release, inspect the advertised schema after upgrades, and retest transport and filters.
- Network exposure: local stdio keeps the server near the client. SSE is useful for a separate process but needs deliberate binding, access control, and encrypted transport when used across hosts.
