The Google Pixel 9 is a good fit if you want a relatively compact Android phone with a bright display, polished design, capable everyday cameras, and long software support. Its biggest drawbacks are the lack of a telephoto camera, less competitive performance for demanding workloads, and charging and battery experiences that reviewers assess differently. Whether it is worth buying now depends on its current price and how it compares with newer phones.
What the Pixel 9 offers
The standard Pixel 9 has a 6.3-inch Actua display, Google’s Tensor G4 processor, and 12GB of RAM. Its rear cameras are a 50MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide. These specifications describe the hardware; they do not by themselves establish how well the phone takes photos.
Google says the display is 35% brighter than the Pixel 8 and describes the Pixel 9 as “twice as durable as Pixel 8.” Both are manufacturer comparisons, not independent measurements of brightness or durability. Google also says the Pixel 9 shares its main and ultrawide camera hardware with the Pixel 9 Pro. Google’s Pixel 9 announcement

How good are its cameras?
Reviewers at TechRadar praise the Pixel 9’s everyday photography. Its main and ultrawide cameras make it a strong choice for ordinary still photos, but they do not offer the flexibility of a dedicated optical telephoto camera.
#1 Best Overall
- The power behind AI on Google Pixel - Google Tensor G4 is Pixel’s most powerful chip yet.
- Advanced camera. Next-level amazing - The award-winning Pixel Camera includes a 50 MP main sensor for incredible image and video quality. And a new 48 MP ultrawide camera for stunning Macro Focus.
- The amazing Actua display - The 6.3-inch Actua display is sharp, vibrant, and super bright. It runs fast, up to 120Hz, for smooth gaming, scrolling, and switching between apps
- Powerful performance - Pixel 9 runs fast and smooth with 12 GB of RAM. And it’s designed to handle Google’s advanced AI.
- Give photos a whole new vision - Reimagine photos in Magic Editor, like adding fall leaves or green grass. Just tap what part you want to change in the photo, and type what you want to see.
What the base model leaves out
The Pixel 9 has no telephoto lens, so frequent photos of distant subjects are a reason to consider a phone with optical zoom. It also omits some tools available on Pro models. Android Central identifies Video Boost, Pro Controls, and High-Res photos among the features missing from the base model. Feature availability can change with software, so check the current specifications if one of these tools is essential.
Display, performance, and battery
Display and design
TechRadar and Tech Advisor praise the design and screen. The 6.3-inch size gives the phone a more compact feel than larger models, while Google’s stated brightness improvement is a comparison with the Pixel 8—not an independent brightness test.

Performance
The Tensor G4 is not a class-leading choice for demanding workloads. TechRadar reports weak benchmark standing and some perceived sluggishness under certain workloads. Notebookcheck also criticizes the processor against competing chips and reports throttling in its testing. Those findings are reviewer assessments, not a guarantee that every user will experience the same behavior; ordinary use and sustained heavy workloads can place different demands on a phone.

Google says the Pixel 9 has approximately 20% longer active-use battery life with the screen on than the Pixel 8. That is Google’s comparison, not a universal independent result. Reviewer assessments vary: Tech Advisor calls battery life middling and criticizes the confusing charging speeds, while Notebookcheck lists runtime as a strength but also criticizes charging speed. Consider the disagreement rather than treating either battery life or charging as a settled strength.

Software support and AI features
Google promises seven years of operating-system updates, Pixel Drops, and security updates. The seven-year period starts when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US; it does not restart when you buy the phone later. Check Google’s update policy for the applicable support details.
Reviewers describe a range of Pixel AI features, but their usefulness depends on what you want to do. Access to some functionality may require a subscription, cloud access, or a later software release. Do not assume a launch promotion or a feature shown in an older review is available to every owner today.

Pros and cons
Pros
- Bright, well-regarded 6.3-inch display and a polished design.
- Strong everyday still photography from the main and ultrawide cameras, according to reviewers.
- Seven years of promised OS, Pixel Drops, and security updates, counted from first US Google Store availability.
Cons
- No telephoto camera for optical zoom.
- Some camera features are reserved for Pro models.
- Processor performance is less compelling for demanding work than competing chips, according to reviewer testing.
- Battery-life assessments vary, and reviewers raise charging concerns.
- Value depends on the phone’s current price and the alternatives available when you buy.
Is the Pixel 9 still worth buying?
It can make sense for someone who wants a relatively compact Pixel, a bright screen, dependable everyday photos, and lengthy remaining software support—provided the current price is attractive. It is a less natural choice if you regularly use optical zoom, prioritize top-end processing, or want particularly fast charging.

Tech Advisor reviewed it at $799/£799 in 2024; that is historical launch-era pricing, not a current quote. Current prices, deals, stock, and regional availability have not been established here, so check local listings before deciding. For a fair comparison with a Pixel 9 Pro or another phone, weigh current price and remaining update support alongside camera flexibility, screen features, demanding-workload performance, charging, and the software features you actually use. Regional availability, carrier support, and network bands can differ; confirm compatibility with your operator.

What reviewers said after launch
In an August 2025 retrospective, Android Central described the phone as generally good while discussing its launch price increase, launch software timing, and hardware omissions relative to competitors. That article reported Android 16 availability at the time; it should not be taken as confirmation of the phone’s software version in October 2026. Android Central’s one-year retrospective
