Yes—Google Photos’ movie maker and video-editing tools rolled out to Chromebooks beginning in 2023. To create a movie, search your Chromebook Launcher for “movie”, then use Google Photos to combine photos and video clips, choose a theme or start from scratch, and add a title card and music. Some editing features require a Chromebook Plus running ChromeOS 118 or newer.

How to make a movie on a Chromebook with Google Photos

  1. Open the Chromebook Launcher and search for movie. Google Photos Help identifies this as the way to create a highlight video on Chromebook.
  2. Choose a suggested theme and the people or pets you want to feature, or start a blank project.
  3. Select photos and video clips for the movie. Google Photos can identify meaningful sections of longer videos for inclusion.
  4. Review the result and customize it: trim clips, apply filters, adjust brightness, contrast, and other settings, and add a title card and music.
  5. Save or share the finished movie from Google Photos.

Google’s workflow is intended to make a short, polished movie without requiring you to arrange every moment manually. The suggested themes and automatic highlight selection are optional starting points; you can also build the project yourself.

Did Google Photos finally get a Chromebook video editor?

Yes. Google announced on July 27, 2022 that the new movie editor and video-editing features would arrive first on Chromebook in fall 2022. Google Photos Community reported on March 30, 2023 that the features were starting to roll out. That means the announcement and the rollout were separate milestones; availability on an individual Chromebook may still depend on its model, ChromeOS version, and rollout status.

The announcement came from Alex Kuscher, then Director of ChromeOS Software. Google described the features as a way to create and share movies from Google Photos, rather than a full professional editing suite.

Can Google Photos use videos stored in Chromebook Files?

Google Photos integrates with Chromebook Gallery and Files. You can open a video in Gallery and continue editing it in Photos, and local Chromebook media can be used when creating a movie. This connects files stored on the device with Photos’ editing workflow; it does not mean every local file is automatically included in a project.

What Chromebook do you need?

Basic access and access to every editing tool are not necessarily the same. Google Photos Help says Chromebook users can search the Launcher for “movie” to create highlight videos, while some features—including certain editing tools—require a Chromebook Plus with ChromeOS version 118 or newer. Support can therefore vary with the device, operating-system version, and whether the feature has reached that device.

If a tool is missing, check the Chromebook model and ChromeOS version first, then check whether Google Photos has received the relevant rollout. A Chromebook laptop that can run Google Photos should not be assumed to support every advanced editing feature.

Is Google Photos enough for Chromebook video editing?

For a quick movie made from photos and clips, Google Photos offers a useful combination of automatic highlights and straightforward adjustments. It is best suited to assembling a shareable video, trimming clips, applying filters, and making basic image adjustments. Its guided, highlight-oriented workflow is different from manually controlling a complex timeline.

Google separately announced LumaFusion as a professional-grade video editor for Chromebooks. It offers multitrack editing along with graphics, visual effects, transitions, distortions, audio tracks, sound effects, narration, and color grading. LumaFusion is software, not a physical Chromebook product.
