Google announced on September 30, 2026, that Opal will turn down in November 2026; it did not give an exact date. That leaves a limited window for trying the experimental AI mini-app builder, so consider the shutdown before investing time in workflows you expect to keep using. Google describes Opal as a way to turn a natural-language goal into an editable, multi-step workflow, with newer agent features for choosing paths and asking follow-up questions.
What is Google Opal?
Opal is an experimental, no-code AI mini-app builder from Google Labs. It lets a creator describe a task, then build an app by combining prompts, model calls and other tools into a workflow. Google’s original introduction says the generated workflow can be revised with natural-language instructions or a visual editor, then shared so others can use it with their own Google accounts. Google introduced Opal on July 24, 2025.
Opal’s launch was a US-only public beta, but that is historical availability information rather than a current access guarantee. Google later announced an expansion to more than 160 countries in November 2025. In December 2025, it also described Opal as a way to create experimental Gems in the Gemini web app, with an advanced editor at opal.google. These dated announcements should not be read as confirmation that access will remain available through the November 2026 turn-down.

The basic idea is to state the outcome you want, inspect the workflow Opal creates, and refine its steps. A workflow is more than a single prompt: it can link inputs, model actions and tools so that one step’s result informs the next. Google describes both generated workflows and an editor where builders can adjust the sequence.
#1 Best Overall
- LOCAL PROCESSING FOR INSTANT RESPONSE: The Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro runs automations directly on the hub, not on remote servers, so lights, locks, thermostats, and routines keep working even when your internet goes down; this local-first architecture delivers near-instant response to every trigger without relying on remote servers to process commands; compatible with 1,000+ devices across 100+ brands, and device data stays at home for enhanced privacy

- MULTI-PROTOCOL SUPPORT WITH EXTENDED RANGE: A single hub covers Matter 1.5, Z-Wave 800 Series with Long Range, Zigbee 3.0, and Bluetooth, so existing devices stay compatible without extra bridges or adapters; 800 Series Z-Wave and Zigbee 3.0 deliver improved reliability and mesh stability, backed by Z-Wave Alliance membership; 2 dedicated external antennas, one for Z-Wave and one for Zigbee, extend wireless reach in larger homes and device-dense environments where signal consistency is critical
- AI-ASSISTED AUTOMATION AND ADVANCED RULE ENGINE: The AI-assisted routine builder suggests and builds automations based on your connected devices, no programming required; Rule Machine enables multi-condition logic across lighting scenes, geofenced arrivals, layered security responses, and whole-home scheduling; when your family arrives after dark, the hub can unlock the door, activate pathway lights, and adjust the thermostat, turning complex sequences into reliable hands-free routines
- NO SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED AND CONTINUOUS UPDATES: Full platform functionality needs no recurring subscription; every automation, integration, and advanced feature is available from setup; continuous platform updates since 2018 have expanded compatibility without requiring new hardware; an active community of tech-savvy homeowners and DIY smart home builders shares custom apps, drivers, and automation blueprints for ongoing value; compact at 3.23 x 2.95 x 0.67 in and just 0.16 lb, it fits anywhere
- Describe the job. Give Opal a clear goal, including what information the app should take in and what result it should produce.
- Review the generated workflow. Check which prompts, model calls and tools appear, and whether the sequence matches the task.
- Refine the steps. Use natural-language instructions or the visual editor to change the workflow. For tasks needing rigid logic, prefer explicit steps that you can inspect and customize.
- Try the app with representative inputs. Check that its output is useful and that any handoffs between steps make sense before sharing or relying on it.
Google’s public descriptions establish these building and editing capabilities, not a guaranteed result for every task. The quality of an automation depends on its instructions, inputs and workflow design; Google has not supplied independent performance measurements in the cited announcements.
What can I build with Google Opal?
Google’s November 2025 examples cover several kinds of mini-apps. They are vendor examples and observations, not independently verified outcomes or a promise that every user will get the same result.

In February 2026, Google described an agent step for Opal’s generate stage. Instead of requiring the builder to select every model manually, the agent can interpret an objective and choose a path, tools and models, including Web Search or Veo. Google illustrated the approach with an interactive story tool and a room-design workflow. Google’s February 24, 2026 announcement names three capabilities:

- Memory across sessions: an app can retain details such as a user’s style preferences.
- Dynamic routing: the workflow can direct a task among steps according to described criteria.
- Interactive chat: the app can ask for missing details or offer choices instead of assuming it has everything it needs.
Google says fixed workflow steps remain available. This creates a practical control choice: an agent-selected path can adapt to different inputs, while explicitly defined steps make the intended logic easier to inspect and constrain. The announcement does not establish that either approach is more reliable or faster in general.
Is Google Opal shutting down?
Yes. Google announced on September 30, 2026, that Opal will turn down in November 2026, without specifying a day. The same announcement says Skills are replacing Gems, and that Opal is part of the Gems by Google Labs transition. Google also says Gems by Google Labs will turn down and will not migrate into Skills. Read Google’s announcement about the transition.
Because the timing is limited and no exact shutdown date was given, treat any Opal workflow as temporary unless Google publishes further information. Avoid building a process that depends on Opal remaining available after November 2026, and keep copies of instructions or outputs you need independently of the app.
