Google’s March 12, 2026 announcement introduces two distinct Gemini-powered experiences in Google Maps: Ask Maps, for conversational place discovery and trip planning, and Immersive Navigation, a redesigned 3D driving view. Ask Maps turns questions into map-based recommendations and can help users save, share, reserve or navigate to places; Immersive Navigation adds more visual route context and road details. Their announced rollouts are not a guarantee that every user can access them now.

What are the new Gemini features in Google Maps?

The announcement covers two features for different tasks, not a single chatbot overlay. Ask Maps helps people find and plan around places through conversation. Immersive Navigation changes how a driving route is displayed and described.

Feature Designed for What it adds
Ask Maps Finding places and planning activities or trips Natural-language questions, conversational recommendations on a customized map, and actions such as saving, sharing, making a restaurant reservation or starting navigation
Immersive Navigation Following a driving route A 3D view of nearby surroundings, contextual road details, a broader route view and updated voice guidance

How Ask Maps helps you find places

Instead of requiring a short keyword search, Ask Maps is designed to handle questions with practical constraints. Google’s examples include asking where to charge a phone without a long coffee line, or whether a public tennis court with lights is available that evening. For a road trip, a user could ask for stops while traveling to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Coral Dunes.

Maps responds with conversational suggestions and a customized map of options. Google says recommendations draw on its place information and community reviews, and may be personalized using places a user has searched for or saved. From there, users can take follow-up actions such as saving or sharing a place, booking a restaurant reservation, or starting navigation. The examples are from Google’s announcement, not evidence that these are the most common queries or that every suggestion will meet a user’s needs.

What information does Ask Maps draw on?

Google says the feature analyzes information from more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million community contributors. Those are figures reported by Google in its March 2026 announcement; they describe the scale of the information base, not independently measured accuracy or recommendation quality. (Google Maps announcement)

What changes in Immersive Navigation?

Immersive Navigation presents nearby buildings, overpasses and terrain in 3D while showing more of the route ahead. Depending on the situation, Maps can highlight lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs. Google says Gemini models analyze recent Street View imagery and aerial photos to represent route context.

Google called Immersive Navigation its “biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade.” That is the company’s characterization, not a measured independent comparison or a published result showing improved safety, accuracy or travel time. (Google Maps announcement)

How this differs from Gemini features already in Maps

Gemini capabilities in Maps predate the March 2026 announcement. Google announced hands-free assistance while driving on November 5, 2025, including multi-step place searches, EV charger queries, traffic disruption reports and, with permission, optional Calendar actions. The earlier update also described landmark-based directions and proactive traffic alerts, with availability varying by feature and platform. (Google’s November 2025 announcement)

On January 29, 2026, Google said Gemini navigation for walking and cycling was rolling out worldwide on iOS and Android wherever Gemini was available. The examples included asking about a neighborhood, nearby restaurants or an ETA, and taking actions such as sending a text while cycling. (Google’s walking and cycling announcement)

When can you use the new features?

In its March 12, 2026 announcement, Google said Ask Maps was beginning to roll out in the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop access expected later. The same announcement described Immersive Navigation as launching with the redesign. The Associated Press reported initial Immersive Navigation availability in the United States on iPhone and Android, and in vehicles using CarPlay and Android Auto. These are launch-era statements, not confirmation of present-day access for every device, account or location. (Google’s rollout announcement; Associated Press, March 12, 2026)

Availability can change as a rollout progresses. Google’s Maps Help page documents Gemini use during navigation on Android and notes that availability depends on supported Gemini countries and languages. It covers route questions and controls, traffic or construction reports, place searches, landmark and destination questions, calls and texts, media, and connected apps. That Help page does not establish that every feature from the March 2026 announcement is available in every supported country. (Google Maps Help: Use Gemini while you navigate)

What the announcement does—and does not—show

The two experiences address different parts of using Maps: Ask Maps helps turn a question into place options and a plan, while Immersive Navigation adds visual route context during a drive. Google has described how they work and given rollout details, but its announcement does not report a controlled comparison of accuracy, time saved or user satisfaction. The scale of Maps’ place and contributor information should not be mistaken for proof of the quality of an individual recommendation.
