If Google asks you to complete a reCAPTCHA on every search in Firefox, it usually means Google has flagged traffic associated with your network as unusual. It does not, by itself, prove that you personally made automated searches, that Firefox is broken, or that your computer has malware. Work through the checks below to see whether the cause is browser data, an extension, or the network you are using.

What the repeated reCAPTCHA means

Google says its “Unusual traffic from your computer network” message most likely shows a reCAPTCHA. Completing the challenge clears the message so you can continue searching. The warning is about traffic Google associates with a network or IP address; it is not a diagnosis of your individual behavior.

Google lists several possible contributors: automated software, a VPN or IPv6 tunnel, other people using the same network, possible malware, or traffic associated with an internet provider. A legitimate user can be affected when an address is shared or has been assigned by an ISP in a way that appears suspicious to Google. Google does not publish a numeric threshold for when it shows the warning.

Try these checks in order

1. Complete the challenge and check that it loads

Complete the reCAPTCHA once to continue using Search. If the challenge does not appear or cannot be completed, check that your browser supports reCAPTCHA and that JavaScript is enabled, as Google recommends.

2. Check whether Firefox is deleting Google cookies

Review Firefox settings and privacy extensions for options that clear Google cookies or site data when you close the browser. Also check whether Google cookies are blocked. In one Mozilla Support discussion, allowing Google cookies stopped the challenge from returning until the user cleared cookies and cache. That is an individual report, not a guaranteed fix; use it as a diagnostic check rather than a reason to keep unnecessary tracking enabled.

3. Test Firefox without extensions

Open Firefox Troubleshoot Mode, or temporarily disable extensions, and try Google Search again. If the prompts stop, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a possible conflict. A Mozilla moderator reported resolving their own case by disabling AdGuard, while another user in the same discussion still saw the problem with extensions disabled. So this test can identify some browser-side cases, but a negative result does not rule out a network or Google-side cause.

4. Compare a fresh session and another browser

Try a private window or a fresh Firefox session, then compare Firefox with another browser on the same network. These comparisons can show whether the behavior follows a particular session or browser, but neither proves that Firefox is at fault. Mozilla Support reports include users who saw different results across Firefox, Chrome, and Edge, as well as cases that changed over time.

5. Compare networks, VPNs, and tunnels

If you use a VPN, proxy, IPv6 tunnel, workplace or school network, or a connection shared with other people, temporarily try a trusted alternative connection if practical. If the prompts occur only on one connection, that points toward the network or its public IP address, though it does not identify the exact cause. Avoid using an unfamiliar or untrusted network just to test.

6. Escalate to whoever manages the affected connection

If the behavior follows a managed or shared network, ask its administrator whether other users are affected. If it follows a VPN connection, contact the VPN provider. If it appears tied to your home internet provider’s connection, contact the ISP. Google’s guidance also recommends investigating possible malware, but the CAPTCHA alone is not evidence that your device is infected; consider that possibility alongside other signs, not as the default explanation.

What Firefox reports do—and do not—show

Mozilla Support contains individual reports of repeated Google challenges in Firefox, including users who compared it with other browsers. In one thread, reports changed over time: a moderator said the issue seemed temporarily resolved on Google’s side, a user said it stopped without changes, and other participants later reported recurrence. Those reports show that symptoms can vary; they do not establish a confirmed Firefox defect or a single current cause.

A separate historical Mozilla Bugzilla report concerned Firefox for Android 134 in private browsing. The reporter described different results in Chrome for Android and Firefox on Windows; a Mozilla commenter attributed the behavior to Google’s anti-abuse systems, and the bug was closed as invalid. This does not show that current Firefox private browsing generally causes repeated challenges. Without evidence matching your Firefox version and reproducing the problem, do not assume a specific update caused it.
