Google’s October 2025 Opal update made workflows easier to inspect and troubleshoot: creators can run steps individually, see errors at the step where they occur, and use parallel runs for complex workflows. Google also reported faster startup, but did not publish a post-update speed benchmark, so there is no verified percentage or time saving to quote.
What Opal is—and what the update changed
Opal is an experimental Google Labs tool for making and sharing AI mini-apps. You describe what you want in natural language; Opal generates a workflow that you can edit visually by adding steps and linking them, without writing code. Google introduced it as a public beta on July 24, 2025, for uses such as rapid prototypes, proofs of concept, productivity tools, and shareable AI apps.
On October 7, 2025, Google added more control over workflow execution and debugging. The changes let creators run a workflow step by step or iterate on a particular step in the console, while errors appear in real time at the step where a failure occurred. Google described this as a no-code debugging experience: you can investigate a workflow through the visual editor and console rather than needing to write debugging code.
How to debug an Opal workflow step by step
- Open the visual editor and select Console. The console lists the workflow steps as they execute and shows how long each step has been executing.
- Start the workflow run. Follow the console’s execution order to see how far the workflow gets and where it stops or reports an error.
- Inspect the step with the problem. Opal localizes real-time errors to the step where the failure occurred, which helps distinguish a failing step from later steps that did not complete.
- Run an individual step. Use that step’s play icon in the console to isolate its behavior instead of relying only on a full workflow run.
- Check the preview alongside the console. The preview mirrors the console state, so you can compare execution details with the app output while iterating.
This makes it easier to narrow down where a workflow goes wrong, but it does not establish that every underlying issue can be diagnosed or fixed automatically. Google’s product manager Megan Li said the goal was to help creators “spend less time debugging and more time building.”

What Google said about performance—and what it did not measure
Google said that, before the update, creating a new Opal could take “up to five seconds or more.” It described under-the-hood changes intended to make startup dramatically faster and said complex workflows can now use parallel runs, allowing multiple steps to execute simultaneously and reducing overall wait time.
The five-second figure describes the earlier experience, not a post-update average. Google did not publish a post-update latency benchmark, percentage speedup, throughput figure, error-rate reduction, or independent performance study in the announcements covered here. The supported conclusion is qualitative: Google says startup is faster and parallel execution can shorten waits in complex workflows, but the size of the improvement has not been quantified in those materials.

What Opal workflows can produce
Opal’s documented examples span several kinds of output and task. A workflow may generate a dynamic webpage or export results to a Google Drive spreadsheet. Google has also described workflows that extract web data, analyze findings, and save results to Google Sheets, alongside data-analysis and custom-reporting tools. These examples show the range of intended uses; they are not a guarantee that every workflow will support every destination or task.
Availability and how Opal is evolving
Opal began as a U.S.-only public beta. On October 7, 2025, Google announced access in 15 additional countries: Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, Singapore, Colombia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Argentina, and Pakistan. On November 6, 2025, Google said it was available in more than 160 countries. That is the latest availability figure stated in the announcements covered here; access can change, so check Opal’s current availability in your location before relying on it.

The product’s workflow model has also moved beyond fixed chains of steps. On February 24, 2026, Google introduced an agent step that can determine a goal-appropriate path and trigger tools or models such as Web Search or Veo. That adds more interactive, autonomous behavior to an experimental tool whose features and availability may continue to change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Opal really no-code?
For building and debugging the workflows described in Google’s announcements, Opal is designed to be used without conventional coding: creators can describe an app in natural language, edit the generated workflow visually, and inspect or rerun steps in the console. “No-code” describes that authoring and debugging approach, not a claim that every possible app or integration can be built without technical limits. Opal remains experimental, and more complex or specialized requirements may not fit its available workflow steps and outputs.
