Short answer: Google’s documented way to retrieve Google Image results is the Custom Search JSON API connected to a Programmable Search Engine. You need an API key, a search-engine ID called cx, and the parameter searchType=image. However, Google says the Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers and is scheduled to be discontinued on January 1, 2027. As of September 29, 2026, treat it as a legacy integration: existing customers can use it while available, but new production work should include a migration plan.
What the Google Images API actually is
There is no separate, general-purpose endpoint branded “Google Images API.” The supported documented route is the Custom Search JSON API. It queries a Programmable Search Engine (PSE), and an image search is selected by adding searchType=image to the request.
The service returns JSON rather than image files. Each result can identify the source page, image context URL, title, snippet, original image dimensions and byte size, plus a thumbnail URL and thumbnail dimensions. Your application must then decide whether it may display, download or reuse an image; a search result is not a copyright or licensing grant.
Google’s current overview states that the Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers
and gives a January 1, 2027 discontinuation date. Existing customers are documented as receiving 100 free queries per day, followed by $5 per 1,000 additional queries, with a 10,000-query-per-day maximum. Verify the service page before launch because availability, quotas and prices can change.

Prerequisites and account setup
- Configure a Programmable Search Engine. Define the sites or web scope that the engine should search and save its configuration.
- Copy the search-engine ID. The identifier is called
cx. Do not confuse it with your API key. - Obtain an API key. Restrict it according to your deployment model. A server-side key should not be exposed in browser JavaScript; use a backend proxy for public applications.
- Confirm eligibility. Because Google has closed the API to new customers, a newly created key or engine may not be enough to obtain service access. Check Google’s current documentation and account notices.
The request endpoint is https://www.googleapis.com/customsearch/v1. At minimum, send key, cx, q and searchType=image.

Understanding the response
The top-level response includes search metadata and, when matches exist, items. Typical image-result fields include:
link: the result’s source URL.titleandsnippet: text shown for the result.image.contextLink: the page associated with the image.image.width,image.heightandimage.byteSize: original-image metadata when supplied.image.thumbnailLink,image.thumbnailWidthandimage.thumbnailHeight: a thumbnail URL and its dimensions.
Fields can be absent, so parse defensively. Keep the context URL with every record and show attribution or licensing information required by the image owner. Avoid hotlinking or downloading an image solely because a URL appeared in a result.
Pagination, quotas and the 100-result ceiling
Google documents a maximum of 100 results for one query, even when more matches exist. Follow the pagination links or metadata returned in the response and stop when the API provides no next page or when you have reached the 100-result ceiling. Do not build an unbounded loop based on an assumed page count.

Cache identical searches where your product and Google’s terms permit it, avoid retry storms, and record request counts. A retry after a timeout may still consume quota, so use bounded retries with backoff rather than immediate loops.

Security and production design
Protect credentials
Store keys in a secret manager or environment variables, restrict them where Google allows, and place calls behind your server. Redact keys from logs and error reports.
Validate user input
Limit query length, reject control characters, and URL-encode values through your HTTP client. Never concatenate raw user text into a URL.
Handle partial and changing data
Treat missing items, missing image metadata and changed source pages as normal. Persist the retrieval time and source URL if your application needs reproducibility.
Plan for shutdown
Put the Google call behind an internal interface such as searchImages(query, options). Store normalized fields (source URL, context URL, thumbnail URL, dimensions and title) so a replacement provider can populate the same model. Run a dual-provider test while the legacy service still works, and communicate any ranking or licensing differences to users.
