Start by confirming your child is using a supervised Google Account on a supported Android or ChromeOS device. Then review time limits and schedules, app access, location, web and Play content controls, and purchase approvals. Family Link settings do not cover every device or every way a child can access content or make purchases.
Confirm the account and device are supervised
Family Link manages a child’s supervised Google Account and certain settings; it does not automatically control every device or Google service the child uses. Most supervision features do not work when the child signs into Google apps on an iPhone or iPad. Google lists screen-time limits, device location, app activity, app blocking and permissions, and Chrome website and permission controls among the features that may not work in that situation. Family Link also cannot remotely view the child’s screen or listen to phone calls. Treat the app as a way to manage specific account and device settings, not as a complete view of everything happening on a phone.
Review screen-time limits and schedules
Daily limits, app limits and unlimited apps
Check the overall daily limit and the limit for each app you want to manage. Also inspect which apps are marked unlimited: those apps can remain available after the daily limit is reached. System apps cannot be assigned app limits. Google says app limits work on Android 7 and later and ChromeOS 83 and later, and apply across the child’s Android and ChromeOS devices. Downtime and School time
Review the start and end times and selected days for each schedule. Decide whether unlimited apps should remain available during those periods. Calls remain available during Downtime. During School time, children can call and text, but notifications such as calls and texts are silenced. Google lists Android 7 and later as the requirement for Downtime and School time; consult its schedule settings guidance for current setup details.
Check app activity, approvals and permissions
Use app activity to see which apps are being used, and review requests to approve or block apps. The reported time is not a measure of all background activity: Google counts time while an app is open and displayed on screen, not while it runs in the background. Review app permissions as well as whether an app is installed or allowed. These controls depend on device and account context, so do not assume they provide the same coverage when the child is signed into Google apps on iOS or iPadOS.
Review location and account data settings
Family Link can show the location of a supervised Android device. Check that location is enabled and that the account and device are set up for the feature. Parents can also manage some Google Account settings related to how Google collects and processes data, including Search or Location History settings. Set web, Search and Google Play content controls
Chrome and Search
Review Chrome site access and permissions, and check the SafeSearch setting for Search. These settings are controls for particular Google services; they should not be treated as filters for every browser, app or route to online content.
Google Play content restrictions
Check the content ratings and restrictions you want for Google Play. They are not a complete barrier: restricted items may still appear in search results or be reachable through a direct link, and apps downloaded previously may remain accessible. Google advises checking that restrictions are correct after you change them. Availability and behavior can vary by country, content type, account setup and Android version. Choose purchase approvals with their scope in mind
Depending on the setting flow, approval choices can cover all content, paid content, in-app purchases or no approval. The key limit is the payment channel: Google says purchase approval settings apply only to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. They do not cover every purchase a child might make through a different billing system. Check Google Play’s purchase approval instructions when choosing the option.
Recheck settings when something changes
Review the controls again when the child changes devices, adds or switches accounts, or when a setting does not behave as expected. Confirm the feature is supported on that device and that the relevant account is supervised. For content restrictions, verify the selected controls after making changes; Google documents limits and variation by country, content type, account setup and Android version.
