Google Earth added historical Street View imagery on June 24, 2025. To view it, open a location, use Pegman to enter Street View, select a highlighted area, then choose See more dates to browse available captures. The dates vary by location; the timeline is not a continuous annual record.
How to see older Street View images in Google Earth
- Open Google Earth and search for a place, or click it on the globe.
- Click the Street View Pegman at the bottom of the screen.
- Select a highlighted area to open street-level imagery.
- Choose See more dates to open the historical imagery timeline.
- Select a date from the slider or thumbnail collection.
- To return to the newest available capture, select Back to latest.
The timeline shows only captures available for the selected location. A street may have several dates, only one date, or no historical dates to browse.

What the new feature shows
The June 24, 2025 update brings panoramic, street-level captures from different dates into Google Earth’s 3D environment. Google described the launch as “bringing historical Street View imagery to Google Earth” in its 20th-anniversary announcement. Google’s developer documentation describes the feature as exploring panoramic street-level imagery from different time periods within an immersive 3D environment.
It is useful for comparing how a particular road, building frontage, or path looked in different available captures. It does not guarantee a year-by-year view of a place.

How far back the timeline goes
Google’s Street View timeline can include imagery dating back to the service’s 2007 launch, according to a 2022 Google post. That is a possible starting point, not a promise that every location has imagery from 2007. The earliest date depends on the captures available at the specific spot.
Historical Street View versus historical imagery in Google Earth
These are separate archives with different viewpoints. Historical Street View shows panoramic scenes from street level; Google Earth’s historical imagery shows overhead satellite or aerial views. Google’s September 2024 update brought historical satellite and aerial imagery to Earth on web and mobile, with some archive material reaching as far back as 80 years, as described in its 2024 announcement. That 80-year reach applies to some overhead imagery, not to Street View.

Why historical dates may be missing
The dates are location-specific. If a timeline offers no older captures for your street, Google’s interface has no older Street View dates to select there. Moving to a nearby highlighted area may reveal a different set of captures, but coverage is not guaranteed.

What else Google Earth includes
Google says Earth brings together aerial photography, satellite imagery, Street View, and 3D visuals. In its 2025 anniversary post, Google also said professional users can access datasets such as city tree-canopy coverage and land temperatures. Those datasets are a separate professional-use capability; they are not part of the steps for browsing historical Street View.
Google reported more than 2 billion searches for places in Earth in the year before its June 2025 anniversary announcement. In September 2024, it reported that Street View contained more than 280 billion images. These are Google-reported figures, not measures of historical-date coverage for any particular location.
