On a computer, open your document and choose Tools > Word count. To keep the count on screen as you write, check Display word count while typing and click OK. In the Google Docs app on Android, iPhone, or iPad, tap More > Word count.
Show the word count on a computer
- Open the document in Google Docs.
- Choose Tools > Word count.
- Read the dialog to see the document’s words, characters, and pages.
- To keep a counter visible while you work, select Display word count while typing, then click OK.
A count box appears at the lower left of the document. Click it to switch among pages, words, characters, and characters without spaces. To remove the box, click it and choose Hide word count. Google recommends the dialog for longer documents and the live display for shorter writing such as articles or school essays. Google’s computer instructions show the same controls.
Check word count in the Google Docs app
- Open the document in the Google Docs app on Android, iPhone, or iPad.
- Tap More.
- Tap Word count.
The mobile view reports words, characters, and characters excluding spaces. See Google’s instructions for Android and iPhone and iPad.
Choose what text to count
By default, the whole-document count excludes headers, footers, and footnotes. To count only a particular passage, select that text first; the word-count view then reports the selection rather than the entire document. Google’s help page notes that word count is available only in Google Docs.

Use the keyboard shortcut
On PC or Chrome OS, press Ctrl+Shift+C. On Mac, press Command+Shift+C. Google cautions that some shortcuts may not work with every language or keyboard, so use Tools > Word count if the shortcut does not open the count. The shortcut is listed in Google’s Docs keyboard-shortcut reference.
If Word count is unavailable
Google says word count is unavailable in Sheets, Slides, and Docs files opened in Microsoft Office Compatibility Mode. Confirm that you are working in a Google Docs document rather than one of those file types or modes. Google’s Android help and iOS help describe these limitations.
