Both Google Docs and Microsoft Word can add page numbers and adjust page layout. The key difference is how they handle the document’s pages and sections: Docs requires Pages format for pagination, while Word uses section breaks for many advanced numbering and layout changes. If you need a continuously scrolling Pageless document, Docs will not show page numbers, headers, or footers in that mode.

Add page numbers in Google Docs
Page numbers, headers, and footers are available when the document uses Pages format. In the current Google Docs help workflow, choose Insert > Page elements > Page number, then select a placement. Use the additional options to control alignment or apply numbering to selected sections. Switch from Pageless to Pages
If the page-number controls are unavailable, check the page format. Pageless is designed for a continuous scrolling document and does not support page numbers, headers, or footers. Set page layout in Docs
In Pages format, File > Page setup provides paper size, orientation, margins, and page color. Google also documents changing orientation for selected content or a section, which is useful when one part—such as a wide table—needs a different page orientation from the rest. Add page numbers in Microsoft Word
For ordinary pagination, use Insert > Page Number, then choose where the number appears and a style. Microsoft’s instructions also cover hiding the number on the first page. Microsoft Support: Add page numbers
Leave the title page unnumbered
- Insert page numbers using Insert > Page Number.
- In the header or footer tools, select Different First Page to omit the number from page one.
- If the second page should display 1, open the page-number formatting options and set Start at to 0.

Use separate numbering in Word sections
For example, a report might use Roman numerals for its preliminary pages and restart Arabic numbering at 1 for the main text. Word’s documented approach is to separate those parts into sections, disconnect the relevant header or footer from the preceding section, and then set the format and starting number.
- Place the cursor where the new section should begin and insert a section break using Layout > Breaks.
- Open the new section’s header or footer and turn off Link to Previous. Headers and footers link separately, so unlink the one that contains the page number.
- Use the page-number formatting controls to choose the number format and starting value for the new section.
- Check the preceding section as well as the new one to confirm that numbering and header or footer content are as intended.

Word for the web limitation
Microsoft says Word for the web cannot add section breaks. If your numbering or layout depends on creating a new section, use desktop Word for that step rather than assuming the web editor has the same control. Microsoft Support
Choose based on the formatting job
- Choose either editor for straightforward page numbering: both provide built-in insertion controls.
- Choose Docs Pages format when you need pagination in Docs: Pageless mode intentionally omits page numbers, headers, and footers.
- Plan section changes before formatting a complex Word document: section breaks and unlinked headers or footers govern numbering and layout for individual parts.
- Consider the Word platform before starting: the web app cannot add section breaks, so section-dependent work needs desktop Word for that operation.
Page numbers also help readers navigate
For a long document, page numbers and consistent headers or footers can make sections easier to locate. Google’s accessibility guidance describes these as landmarks that help readers find their place in a document. Google Docs Editors Help
