Google said it disrupted more than 50,000 instances of DRAGONBRIDGE activity across YouTube, Blogger, and AdSense during 2022. The figure counts Google enforcement actions—not 50,000 people, a verified total across the internet, or proof that the operation persuaded a large audience. Google reported that much of the material it removed had little authentic engagement.
What is DRAGONBRIDGE?
Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) described DRAGONBRIDGE, also known as “Spamouflage Dragon,” as a spammy influence network linked to China. Google said most of its activity consisted of low-quality material without an overt political message; a smaller share of accounts posted about current events with pro-China messaging. The content primarily targeted Chinese speakers, though some narratives appeared in English and other languages.
That description should not be stretched into a claim about who directed the network. Google’s cited reporting links it to China but does not establish a specific government agency or chain of command.
What did Google take down, and what does 50,000 mean?
The headline figure is Google’s count of more than 50,000 disrupted instances across YouTube, Blogger, and AdSense during calendar year 2022. It is an enforcement count for those Google services, not a count of unique operators, a measure of successful influence, or a census of activity on every platform.

|---|---|---|
| More than 50,000 | Disrupted instances in 2022 | Google’s reported enforcement count across YouTube, Blogger, and AdSense. |
| More than 100,000 | Accounts over the network’s lifetime, as reported in January 2023 | A separate cumulative account total in Google TAG’s report; it is not the 2022 instances figure. |
| 53,177 | YouTube channels disabled in 2022 | Google reported that 58% had zero subscribers. Separately, 42% of videos had zero views and 83% had fewer than 100 views. |
| Nearly 95% | Blogger blogs terminated in December 2022 | Google said these blogs received 10 or fewer views; over 96% received no comments. This applies to blogs terminated in December, not every blog removed throughout 2022. |
The measurements use different units: an instance, an account, a channel, a video, and a blog are not interchangeable. In particular, the YouTube view percentages describe videos, while the subscriber figure describes channels.
Google’s January 26, 2023 report explains TAG’s role this way: “Threat Analysis Group’s (TAG) mission is to understand and counter serious threats, including actors engaged in coordinated information operations (IO).” This is Google’s description of its own mission and reporting.

What kinds of messages did Google identify?
Google said DRAGONBRIDGE messaging touched on China’s COVID-19 response, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and criticism of the United States. It also reported content praising China’s pandemic response, criticizing pro-democracy protests, and supporting unification with Taiwan.
Google described a change in focus around Taiwan in 2022. After then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s possible visit to Taipei was announced in late July, Google said some network material shifted to criticizing her. During and after the People’s Liberation Army drills around Taiwan in early August, Google reported a sharper militaristic tone, including calls for Taiwan’s leadership to surrender.
Google said much of the output was spammy and low quality: videos featuring animals, landscapes, food, sports, and other subjects, sometimes with blurry visuals, garbled audio, poor translations, or leftover placeholder text. It also reported experiments with more polished formats, including bespoke videos, human narration, on-camera talk shows, animated political cartoons, and political messages mixed with apolitical material such as beauty advice and cooking tips.
Did DRAGONBRIDGE reach real viewers?
Google’s reported figures point to low engagement on the Google services it measured. Among the 53,177 YouTube channels it disabled in 2022, 58% had no subscribers; among their videos, 42% had no views and 83% had fewer than 100. For Blogger blogs terminated in December 2022, nearly 95% had 10 or fewer views, according to Google. These platform-specific metrics do not establish the network’s total reach elsewhere or the effect of its content on audiences.
Rank #3
The distinction matters: a large volume of posts or enforcement actions does not by itself demonstrate broad authentic reach or political impact. Google reported large-scale activity alongside very limited engagement on much of the material it reviewed.

In a June 26, 2024 update, Google said it disrupted more than 65,000 DRAGONBRIDGE instances in 2023 and more than 10,000 in the first quarter of 2024. It also reported more than 175,000 lifetime instances. These are historical figures from that update, not verified totals for 2026.

Google also described activity before Taiwan’s January 13, 2024 general election. It said DRAGONBRIDGE posted thousands of YouTube videos and comments using synthetic audio and avatars to promote a false “secret history” document critical of outgoing president Tsai Ing-wen. Google reported practically no organic engagement from that campaign and said AI-generated video and image use had not significantly increased engagement from real viewers. Those are Google’s observations about this activity, not evidence that AI-generated political content cannot persuade audiences in other circumstances.

What the takedown figures can—and cannot—show
- They show Google enforcement on named services: the 2022 headline count covers YouTube, Blogger, and AdSense.
- They do not count unique people: the report distinguishes instances from accounts, channels, videos, and blogs.
- They do not establish broad audience impact: Google reported low engagement on much of the content it measured.
- They do not establish a specific state sponsor: Google’s wording links the network to China but does not identify a government unit directing it.
- They are not a current activity count: the most recent follow-up described here is dated June 26, 2024; activity in October 2026 is not established by these reports.
