You can build a useful first Google Data Studio report in about 10 minutes if you already have access to a suitable data source. Google restored the product name Data Studio in April 2026; older guides may call it Looker Studio. Start with a source you can use now, add a chart that answers one question, and let the editor save your changes automatically.
Before you start: choose a data source you can access
A report needs a data source. You can use one already available to your account or connect a new one. The existing-source route usually involves less setup; a new connector may ask for account details or authorization. Google’s report tutorial describes both routes.

BigQuery is an optional route, not the simplest default for every beginner: Google’s FAA public-data example requires a Google Cloud project associated with a valid billing account. See the Quick Start guide for that example.
Create a report and connect the source

Go to datastudio.google.com and sign in to your Google account. Google says the older Looker Studio address redirects, and existing reports do not need updating because of the name change; see Welcome to Data Studio.

Choose Create, then Report. The report editor opens with the Add data panel, according to Google’s tutorial.

Choose an existing source under My data sources, or select a connector under Connect to data. Follow any prompts for account access or authorization, then add the source to the report.

Click the untitled report name in the header and enter a descriptive title. Name it for the question or subject the report covers so it is easy to identify later.
Make the first table and chart useful
Check the automatically added table
A table appears when you add a source. Use the properties panel to adjust its data and style. For a useful first draft, keep the table focused: show only the information you need to answer one straightforward question, such as which categories have the highest values.

Add one chart

Choose Add a chart, select a time-series chart, and place it on the report canvas.

Review the fields selected for the chart and adjust them in the properties panel if needed. Google’s tutorial says its example with an Analytics source automatically selects Date and Views; other connectors may provide different fields.

Move or resize the chart so its labels and values are readable. Make one basic style adjustment if it improves clarity, then stop rather than spending the session on fine layout details.
Check the draft and finish
Review the report title, table, and chart. Google says report changes save automatically, so there is no separate Save step to find. The result is a first draft you can refine when you have a more specific question or need additional views; see Google’s report tutorial.

Is the free edition enough?
For this individual starter report, the no-cost Data Studio edition is sufficient. Google positions it for individual data exploration and ad-hoc visualization, while Data Studio Pro is aimed at teams and organizations that need more agility, control, and enterprise features. Pro is not required for the basic steps here; see Google’s April 10, 2026 announcement.
