Google confirmed on June 17, 2021, that attackers were exploiting a high-severity Chrome flaw, CVE-2021-30554, in WebGL. The company released Chrome 91.0.4472.114 for Windows, Mac, and Linux to address it. SecurityWeek called this Google’s sixth Chrome point-update that year for an exploited flaw; that count describes its reporting as of that date, not a final tally of every zero-day across platforms.

What Google confirmed

Google’s June 17, 2021, Chrome Stable release notice announced version 91.0.4472.114 for desktop users on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Google said the update would roll out over the coming days or weeks, so it might not have appeared for every user immediately.

The notice identified CVE-2021-30554 as a high-severity use-after-free vulnerability in WebGL. It stated: “Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2021-30554 exists in the wild.” In other words, Google had evidence the flaw was being exploited, rather than describing only a theoretical vulnerability.

What “sixth” means

SecurityWeek reported on June 17 that the update was the sixth Chrome point-update that year to fix flaws Google said were being exploited. The ordinal belongs to SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous count of Chrome patch events as of that report. It is not a universal count of all 2021 zero-days, nor a final year-end total.

Google TAG also reported that 33 publicly disclosed zero-day exploits had been used in attacks by the halfway point of 2021, 11 more than the full-year total for 2020. Separately, Mandiant said 75% of the zero-day vulnerabilities it analyzed from 12 vendors in 2021 involved Microsoft, Apple, and Google products. What the public advisory does not establish

Google’s release notice identifies the vulnerability, affected component, severity, exploitation status, release date, and patched version. It does not publicly name an attacker, describe victims or a campaign, or explain the exploit’s technical chain. Those details should not be inferred from reports about other Chrome vulnerabilities.

For example, Google TAG’s July 14, 2021, analysis described campaigns involving CVE-2021-21166 and CVE-2021-30551, two different Chrome renderer vulnerabilities. Google said it believed those two were used by the same actor and described one-time links sent by email to targets it believed were in Armenia. Those findings are about those CVEs, not CVE-2021-30554. Google TAG’s analysis.

How to protect Chrome users

The practical response is to install the browser update rather than seek a separate cleanup product. Google’s later guidance says users should install Chrome updates when prompted and enterprise administrators should keep auto-update enabled. Google’s guidance on zero-day protection.

  • Personal desktop: Allow Chrome to update, then relaunch the browser if it asks you to do so. The release covered Windows, Mac, and Linux, with a staged rollout.
  • Managed devices: Ask your administrator about update timing if your organization controls Chrome deployment; Google advises administrators to keep auto-update enabled.

Google’s March 2022 explanation also cautioned that rising public counts of exploited flaws can reflect greater vendor transparency and improved detection, and that absolute counts alone do not measure security risk. Google’s explanation.
