Short answer: Compute Engine and a VPS can both run a software encoder for a continuous YouTube stream, but neither is automatically cheaper or more reliable. Compare the exact machine or VPS plan, region, outbound-data terms, encoding workload, and recovery setup. Google publishes availability targets for Compute Engine; those are infrastructure claims, not a promise that an end-to-end YouTube stream will stay live.

What you are actually choosing

In this setup, a remote machine runs an encoder and sends its output to YouTube. You still need to arrange how the video reaches that machine: for example, the media may already be stored remotely, or it may need to be uploaded or transferred. Renting a VM does not itself make local source files available to the encoder.

YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming using software or hardware. A dedicated hardware encoder is not inherently required to use a software encoder on a cloud VM. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature and confirm access before the planned launch. YouTube Help: get started with live streaming.

The practical comparison is between a specific Compute Engine configuration and a specific VPS offer—not between Google Cloud as a whole and an unspecified category of VPS.

Compare these costs and operating requirements

Decision factor Compute Engine VPS
Recurring cost Include VM runtime, boot or persistent disk, applicable IP or network charges, and internet egress. Google says Compute Engine billing includes compute, networking, and storage; its headline prices are not a complete quote. Google Cloud Compute Engine Check the selected plan’s recurring charge, transfer allowance or overage, storage and backup costs, and any setup fees. No VPS provider or plan is specified here, so a comparable price is not stated.
Availability and maintenance Google advertises 99.9% availability for most VM families and 99.95% for memory-optimized VMs, and describes live migration to another host within a zone. These are product-level claims, not an end-to-end streaming guarantee. Google Cloud Compute Engine Read the provider’s actual availability terms, maintenance policy, host-failure behavior, and reboot process. No provider-specific VPS availability figure is established here.
Outbound network Evaluate the VM type, destination, routing, applicable limits, and current regional pricing. Google says bandwidth is accounted per VM and egress capacity depends on machine type and conditions; maximum figures do not guarantee throughput to YouTube ingest. Google Cloud network bandwidth and Google Cloud networking prices Confirm the upload capacity, transfer cap, overage rate, and any per-flow or fair-use limits for the chosen plan. No directly comparable VPS terms are stated here.
Encoding workload Size the VM for the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and number of simultaneous outputs. YouTube’s settings guide does not determine what VM size can encode them. Check the plan’s CPU or hardware-acceleration options against the same workload. A provider name alone does not establish encoding capacity.
Operations and recovery You remain responsible for configuring the encoder, handling keys securely, monitoring the process, and arranging restart and reconnect behavior. Evaluate the same operational work, plus the provider’s console and recovery options. Neither hosting label by itself ensures the encoder process restarts or reconnects correctly.

What Compute Engine’s published figures do—and do not—tell you

Google’s product page currently advertises availability of 99.9% for most Compute Engine VM families and 99.95% for memory-optimized VMs. It also describes live migration within a zone. These figures describe Google’s VM offering; they do not account for every link in a stream, including the encoder process, source media, network route, and YouTube ingest.

The same page gives an e2-micro starting price of $0.01 and outbound transfer starting at $0.08 per GB on Premium Tier. It also lists up to 200 GB per month outbound on Standard Tier and free inbound transfer. These are conditional headline terms, not a 24/7-stream estimate: region, tier, eligibility, usage, and current pricing affect the bill. Persistent Disk starts at $0.04 per GB per month, separately from VM pricing. Check the selected configuration in Google’s pricing calculator before committing. Google Cloud Compute Engine.

For a continuous stream, outbound transfer can be a major cost component. Calculate the encoded output’s data over the billing period and verify how the selected route and tier are charged; do not assume that egress to YouTube is free or that an advertised maximum VM bandwidth is the rate your stream will sustain. Google’s network documentation explains that egress depends on VM type and destination. Google Cloud network bandwidth.

Configure the encoder for YouTube, not for the hosting brand

YouTube’s guidance applies whether the encoder runs on Compute Engine or a VPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and documents H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options. Its current guidance supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency (with a maximum of four seconds), and recommends constant-bitrate encoding. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected resolution and frame rate rather than copying a number detached from those settings. YouTube Help: encoder settings.

  • Use the stream key and ingest settings supplied in YouTube Studio; treat the key as a secret and do not place it in publicly readable scripts or logs.
  • Confirm that the chosen encoder and VM can sustain the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations are not a sizing benchmark for either hosting option.
  • Test the full route from the media source through the encoder to YouTube ingest, including reconnect behavior after a dropped connection.
  • Plan for the case where a VM restarts, a process exits, source media becomes unavailable, or a connection is interrupted; availability of the host alone does not resolve those failures.

How to decide between a specific Compute Engine VM and VPS

  1. Set the workload: write down stream resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, number of simultaneous outputs, source-media location, and the interruption window you can tolerate.
  2. Choose comparable regions: compare the likely route to YouTube ingest and any transfer terms for the regions available to each provider. A location label alone does not guarantee a particular sustained upload rate.
  3. Build the full monthly cost: for Compute Engine, include VM runtime, disks, applicable networking charges, and egress. For the VPS, include plan charges, transfer limits or overages, storage, backups, and setup fees. Use the providers’ current terms for the exact configuration.
  4. Compare operational safeguards: review provider availability terms and maintenance behavior, then decide how you will monitor the encoder, restart it, preserve its configuration, protect the key, and confirm that it reconnects to YouTube.
  5. Test before relying on it: run the intended encode and stream long enough to check CPU capacity, stability, outbound usage, and recovery behavior. No VM size or VPS plan can be declared sufficient without workload-specific evidence.

Choose Compute Engine if its specific configuration, network terms, and operational controls fit your requirements and you are comfortable managing the VM. Choose a VPS if a named provider’s plan offers a better fit on total cost, capacity, and support for your workload. Without a VPS plan, region, stream settings, and required reliability, naming a universal winner or a defensible total cost would be guesswork.
