It is not a universal ebook storefront or a substitute for commercial book services: what can be previewed or accessed depends on the title and the user’s location.
What can you do with the Google Books API?
The Books API is a developer interface for searching and browsing book records, retrieving details such as metadata and availability, and working with bookshelves. Depending on the record and access conditions, details can include a preview link or price information; no single field or purchasing option is guaranteed for every title. Google describes Books API v1 as experimental and says it “is not intended to be used as a replacement for commercial services” (Google Books API overview).
For a website that needs to display a book preview, Google offers the separate Embedded Viewer API. It embeds a preview in a page and can be controlled with JavaScript. The viewer is for presenting a preview, while the Books API provides programmatic search and book information.
How Google Books is organized: volumes and bookshelves
Volumes
A volume is an individual book or magazine record. Developers can search the /volumes collection or retrieve a particular record by its volume ID. Search supports field prefixes for title, author, publisher, subject, ISBN, LCCN, and OCLC queries.

Bookshelves and My Library
A bookshelf is a collection of volumes. The API can retrieve public bookshelves and list the volumes on a shelf. With the relevant user authorization, an application can also work with shelves in that user’s My Library, including adding, moving, removing, or clearing volumes.
Google’s getting-started guide also discusses reading position and review as Google Books concepts. However, the current API reference lists volumes and bookshelves as its resource types; do not assume it offers a general-purpose API for every review or reading-position operation.

API specs and common endpoints
The Books API uses REST-style HTTP requests and returns JSON. Its documented base URI is https://www.googleapis.com/books/v1. Common routes include:
GET /volumes?q={search terms}to search for matching volumes.GET /volumes/{volumeId}to retrieve a volume by ID.GET /mylibrary/bookshelvesto access the authenticated user’s bookshelf collection.
These routes use the base URI above. The reference documents additional methods for public shelves, shelf contents, and authorized My Library operations; the method and authorization required depend on the specific action.

Authentication: public data versus a user’s library
Requests must identify the application making them. For public data, use an API key or an OAuth 2.0 token. Access to private, user-specific information requires OAuth 2.0 authorization from the user. Google identifies the Books API OAuth scope as https://www.googleapis.com/auth/books. Use the narrowest access appropriate to the operation, and consult the method reference for its requirements.
Why previews and ebook access vary
Book metadata, a preview, and ebook access are different kinds of availability. Copyright, contractual terms, title-level settings, and the user’s location can affect what Google Books returns or makes accessible. Google notes that results may be restricted based on the application’s IP address because legal restrictions vary by end-user location; some books, for example, may be previewable only in the United States.

For ebook-related details, inspect a volume’s accessInfo data rather than assuming that a search result can be read or downloaded. EPUB availability and download links depend on conditions such as whether the title has a sample, has been purchased, or is in the public domain in the user’s location.
Books API vs. Embedded Viewer API

How large is the Google Books catalog?
Google’s API team reported more than 15 million searchable books in a May 10, 2011 launch-era blog post (New Books API for developers). That is a historical figure, not a current catalog count. The official overview, usage guide, and API reference reviewed here do not state an up-to-date total.
