Changing the phone number on your Google Account is not the same as moving Google Authenticator codes to a new phone. Google documents code syncing and transfer as an app and device issue: codes saved to your Google Account sync when you sign in to that same account in Authenticator on a new device; codes used without an account can be transferred with the old phone’s export QR code. Google says an account-level number change affects only some services, so check the relevant Phone and Security settings rather than assuming every service updates automatically.
First, identify what changed
You changed only your phone number
A number change in Google Account settings affects only some Google services. Some settings, including 2-Step Verification, may have a separate phone number to manage. Review the Phone and Security sections of your Google Account and check the settings for any service that uses your number. Google says it may take a week before a new number can be used to verify your identity for sensitive actions such as changing your password. Google Account Help: change your phone number
This number-setting change is distinct from transferring Authenticator codes stored on a phone. Google’s guidance describes code availability on another device in terms of syncing with a Google Account or transferring codes directly from the old device; it does not make an absolute guarantee about every Authenticator entry after a number-only change.

You replaced your phone and still have your Google Account
If your Authenticator codes were saved to your Google Account, install Google Authenticator on the new phone and sign in to the same Google Account in the app. Google says the codes sync automatically. Check that the entries you need appear before wiping, trading in, or otherwise retiring the old phone. Google Authenticator Help: transfer your Google Authenticator codes

You used Authenticator without a Google Account
Use the app’s transfer function while both phones are available. On the old phone, open Authenticator’s transfer or export flow, select the accounts to move, and display the QR code. On the new phone, choose the import or transfer option and scan that code. The app may create more than one QR code if you are moving many entries. Complete the import and confirm the codes are present before erasing the old phone. Google’s instructions require the old device and its codes for this manual transfer; keep the current version of Authenticator on the old device. Which transfer method fits?
| Method | What it requires | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Google Account sync | Codes saved to the Google Account and access to that same account on the new phone | Sign in to the account in Authenticator on the new device; Google says saved codes sync automatically. |
| Manual QR transfer | The old phone with the codes, the new phone, and the current app on the old phone | Export selected entries as QR code(s) from the old phone, then scan them using the new phone’s import flow. |

For your Google Account
Try another second step already configured for the account or use Google’s account-recovery process. Google backup codes can help when you lose a phone, change a phone number, or cannot get a code through text, a call, or Authenticator. Each code works once; generating a replacement set deactivates the previous set. These codes are for signing in to the Google Account, not for restoring every third-party account entry stored in Authenticator. If you did not sync or transfer those entries and no longer have the old phone, contact the affected services.

Safe sequence when changing your number or phone
- Separate the changes. Determine whether you changed only the number, replaced the phone, or did both.
- Check number settings. Review the Phone and Security sections of your Google Account and the service-specific 2-Step Verification settings. Confirm the intended recovery number is listed. Allow for Google’s stated delay before using a changed number for sensitive verification actions. Google Account Help: change your phone number
- Use sync if your codes are saved to your account. Sign in to that same Google Account in Authenticator on the new phone, then verify the needed entries appear before wiping the old one. Google Authenticator Help: transfer your Google Authenticator codes
- Otherwise, transfer directly. Keep both devices available, export from the old phone, import on the new phone, and verify the entries before retiring the old device. Google Authenticator Help: transfer your Google Authenticator codes
- Prepare a Google sign-in fallback. Save Google backup codes securely while you can still access the account. If locked out, try another configured second step or account recovery.
