Google announced two repair-focused features for Pixel phones in December 2023: Repair Mode, intended to help protect personal data while a phone is being serviced, and a Diagnostic App for checking a device before and after repair. Their availability can depend on the Pixel model, so check Google’s current guidance for your phone before relying on either feature.
What Pixel Repair Mode does
Repair Mode is designed for the period when you hand your phone to a repair technician. Google says it can help protect personal data without requiring you to back up, wipe, and later restore the phone first. In Google’s Dec. 14, 2023 announcement, Steven Nickel, Devices and Services Director of Operations at Google, said the feature “can help protect your privacy and prevent access to all the data that’s on your device when it’s getting repaired.” The wording matters: Repair Mode is a privacy aid, not a guarantee that every item of data or every privacy risk is eliminated. Google’s announcement describes enabling it before handing over the phone and turning it off after it is returned. Google had also introduced the feature in its Dec. 6, 2023 Pixel Feature Drop post, describing it as a way to help keep personal data protected and preserved during service or repair.
How to check a Pixel before and after repair
Google said the Pixel Diagnostic App can be launched from the Phone app and used to test for device issues before and after a repair, including checking whether the phone is functioning after service. Its announcement does not give a complete list of tests or a current model-by-model eligibility list.
- Before service: Check Google’s current instructions for your exact Pixel model. If Repair Mode is supported, enable it before handing the phone to the provider. Use the Diagnostic App to check for issues beforehand.
- After service: Use the Diagnostic App again to check the phone’s operation. Discuss any remaining concern with the repair provider; a diagnostic check is not a professional inspection or a guarantee of repair quality.

Choose a repair route
Google describes both do-it-yourself and professional repair options. The appropriate route depends on whether you have the skills, model-specific instructions, tools, and exact part needed, as well as whether local service is available. Google directs Pixel owners to support resources for repair instructions, manuals, parts, tools, and diagnostic information.

Google also reported in 2023 that most people could have a phone repaired and returned within 2–4 hours if replacement parts were available, and that over 80% of Pixel device owners were within 10–20 miles of an authorized repair center. These are Google’s dated figures from its 2023 announcement, not a promise about current service coverage or turnaround for an individual repair. Google’s announcement is not a substitute for checking current local options.

What to verify before you hand over a Pixel
- Look up current instructions for your precise Pixel model; the 2023 announcements do not establish eligibility for every model.
- Ask the provider about the repair, parts, and expected turnaround for your location.
- If available on your phone, enable Repair Mode before service and use the Diagnostic App before and after the repair.
- For DIY work, confirm the part and tools match the model and repair instructions rather than assuming a generic kit will fit.
