Choose Golf Story for a solo, story-led adventure that uses golf as the starting point for exploration and varied side activities. Choose Mario Golf: Super Rush if you want multiple modes, local or online multiplayer, and fast simultaneous play. For golf transformed into deliberate comedy, try What the Golf? These are feature-based recommendations, not a ranking from comparative playtesting.

Choose Golf Story for a golf-centered adventure
Golf Story combines golf with exploration and a serious narrative. Nintendo’s Switch listing describes a story across eight environments, each with courses, challenges, characters, and secrets. It lists the game as a digital edition for Nintendo Switch, with single-system play for one to two players; Nintendo gives its release date as September 28, 2017. Nintendo’s Golf Story listing
Golf is also the basis for activities beyond playing a standard round. Sidebar Games’ feature list includes tournaments, disc golf, mini golf, wee links, races, mowing, drone flights, and geocaching, as well as golf-based problem solving and golfer and equipment upgrades. #1 Best Overall
- Play through a dramatic story with a diverse cast of characters.
That makes it the better documented fit if you want a single-player adventure with a range of golf-themed diversions, rather than a game whose central appeal is a menu of multiplayer modes.
Choose Mario Golf: Super Rush for modes and multiplayer
Nintendo lists five modes: Standard Golf, Speed Golf, Golf Adventure, Solo Challenge, and Battle Golf. Speed Golf has players tee off together and race to finish, while Battle Golf turns play into a contest to capture holes. Several modes support up to four players locally or online; online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also notes that additional games, systems, or accessories may be required for multiplayer, so check the setup for the mode and players you have in mind. Pick Super Rush when playing with others or switching among distinct golf modes matters more than having the story-and-exploration structure described for Golf Story.
Choose What the Golf? for a comic detour
What the Golf? is the alternative here for players who want golf treated as a joke and a source of surprises, not a conventional round or a story-led golf adventure. Team17 describes it as “A game made for people who hate golf, by people with no clues or respect for the game.” The publisher’s page links to Apple Arcade; that link alone does not establish availability on other platforms or the service’s current terms. Check the edition and multiplayer setup before buying
Format may settle the choice if you want a physical Switch copy: Nintendo’s official purchase page offers a physical edition of Mario Golf: Super Rush, while Nintendo lists Golf Story as digital. These listings do not establish current retailer stock, prices, or third-party formats. Nintendo’s Mario Golf: Super Rush purchase page
For multiplayer, confirm the number of players, whether they will play locally or online, and any required subscription, additional game, system, or accessory before purchasing. Nintendo says online play for Super Rush requires Nintendo Switch Online and flags that extra equipment or games may be needed for some multiplayer setups.
