Choose a GPS watch for hands-free, mapped distances around the course; choose a laser rangefinder when you want to measure to a specific visible flag or other target. Neither is universally better—the right tool depends on which information you use and how you prefer to get it.
How a GPS watch and laser rangefinder measure distance
GPS watch: mapped course distances
A golf GPS watch uses satellite positioning alongside course mapping to show distances to green areas and other mapped course points. It gives you course-wide information without aiming at a particular target. The exact coverage and features depend on the device, so check that a model supports the courses you play and provides the information you want. Garmin explains GPS distance-measurement devices.
Laser rangefinder: a reading to a chosen target
A laser rangefinder requires you to aim at a visible flag or other object and take a reading. Garmin describes it this way: “A laser rangefinder gives an exact measurement between you and the flag or any object that is targeted, making it more precise but requiring more effort to take the measurement.” This is Garmin’s manufacturer explanation, not an independent accuracy test. Garmin’s overview of distance-measurement devices also contrasts laser targeting with GPS mapping.
Which one fits the way you play?
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quick, hands-free distances while moving around the course | GPS watch | It provides mapped course distances without requiring you to aim at each target. |
| Distance to a specific visible flag or object | Laser rangefinder | You aim at the target and take a measurement. |
| Mapped distances to green areas and course points | GPS watch | The information depends on course mapping and the device’s supported features. |
| Choosing between broad course information and a target-specific reading | Decide based on the distance information you actually use | Golf Monthly’s 2025 comparison describes GPS as commonly showing front, middle and back green distances, while a laser measures to the pin. This is editorial comparison, not a controlled accuracy test. Read Golf Monthly’s comparison. |
A golfer can use both approaches for different purposes, but buying both is not necessary. Start by asking whether you routinely need mapped distances without stopping to aim, or readings to particular visible targets.

Check competition rules and device functions
Rules depend on the local rule adopted by the competition. The USGA and The R&A state that distance-measuring devices may be used only when the relevant local rule is in effect. When it is, the device must be limited to measuring distance; prohibited functions can include measuring slope, wind or temperature, or providing club, shot or green-reading advice. See the USGA and The R&A joint statement on distance-measuring devices.
The USGA’s rules FAQ likewise advises against using slope or wind functions under the applicable rule. Before a competition, confirm the rules in force for that event and make sure any prohibited functions are switched off. Check the USGA Rules FAQ.

Switchable features do not settle whether a device is permitted
For example, Bushnell’s Tour V7 Shift product page describes slope-adjusted distances and a tournament mode. That illustrates a rangefinder with switchable functionality; the product page does not establish whether every feature is allowed in every event. See Bushnell’s Tour V7 Shift details.

A GPS watch is the practical choice for hands-free, mapped course distances. A laser rangefinder suits golfers who want to aim at a specific visible target and measure to it. Compare the target information, effort to use, course coverage and competition settings—not an assumed universal advantage in accuracy or scoring.
