Gold and the U.S. dollar often move in opposite directions, but they do not follow a fixed rule. A weaker dollar can make dollar-priced gold more affordable to buyers using other currencies, while lower real yields can reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold. Risk, investor flows, central-bank activity and physical supply and demand can change or overwhelm those effects. The relationship is useful context, not a reliable signal of gold’s next move.

Why does gold often rise when the dollar falls?

International gold is commonly quoted in U.S. dollars. When the dollar weakens against other currencies, a given dollar price for gold may cost less in those currencies. That can support demand from buyers outside the United States, all else equal. A stronger dollar can have the opposite effect by making dollar-priced gold more expensive for those buyers.

Keep the dollar quote separate from the price a buyer faces locally. A local-currency gold price reflects both the dollar-denominated gold price and the exchange rate. The two can move in different directions: gold may rise in dollars while falling, or rising by a different amount, in another currency.

This affordability channel is not a guarantee. The dollar’s exchange value is set in foreign-exchange markets; the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury do not target a particular exchange-rate level, according to the Federal Reserve’s exchange-rate FAQ.

How interest rates and real yields affect gold

Gold pays no coupon or deposit interest. When interest-bearing assets offer higher returns, the opportunity cost of holding gold can increase. Lower yields, including lower real yields, may ease that headwind and make gold relatively more attractive.

Markets also respond to expectations: gold and bond markets can reprice before the Federal Reserve changes its policy rate. A rate hike is not automatically bearish for gold, nor is a rate cut automatically bullish. Investors interpret rate decisions in light of growth, inflation credibility, financial stability and the dollar. The World Gold Council makes this distinction in its Gold Mid-Year Outlook 2026.

What else can move gold prices?

Gold has several sources of demand, and supply conditions matter too. A useful way to assess the market is to consider these drivers together rather than treating the dollar as the sole explanation.

Factor How it can affect gold Important qualification
U.S. dollar A weaker dollar can support dollar-priced gold by improving affordability for buyers using other currencies; a stronger dollar can be a headwind. The effect is conditional, and local-currency prices also depend on the buyer’s exchange rate. World Gold Council; Federal Reserve.
Real yields and rate expectations Lower yields can reduce the opportunity cost of gold; higher yields can raise it. Market expectations and the reason for a rate move matter. World Gold Council.
Geopolitical and policy risk Uncertainty or financial stress can increase interest in perceived defensive assets. Investors may instead sell gold to raise cash, take profits or rebalance. World Gold Council.
Investment flows and positioning ETF inflows and other private investment can add demand; outflows or profit-taking can pressure prices. Flows and positioning can change quickly and amplify moves in either direction. World Gold Council; Federal Reserve staff.
Central-bank demand Official purchases add a source of demand and reflect reserve decisions. A higher market value of official gold reserves may result from rising gold prices, not new purchases. Federal Reserve staff; Federal Reserve staff.
Jewelry, bars and coins, recycling, and mine supply Consumer demand and changes in recycled or mined supply affect the market balance. High prices can alter demand and recycling; these forces are not captured by the dollar alone. World Gold Council.

Risk and investor behavior

Geopolitical shocks, financial stress and policy uncertainty may encourage demand for gold, but its perceived defensive role is not a guarantee of gains. Investors may sell during a liquidity squeeze or after a sharp rise. Fund flows and market positioning can amplify price moves in both directions.

In its December 2025 Gold Outlook 2026, the World Gold Council’s model attributed roughly 12 percentage points of gold’s year-to-date 2025 performance to high risk, primarily geopolitical risk. It attributed another 10 percentage points to reduced opportunity cost from a weaker dollar and marginally lower rates, and roughly 16 percentage points to geopolitical risk and dollar weakness together. These are model attributions for that report’s data period, not proof that those factors caused a fixed share of the price move in every market period.

Central banks and claims of “de-dollarization”

Central banks hold gold as a reserve asset, and purchases can support demand. But a larger share of gold in official reserves does not by itself show that central banks are broadly selling dollars. A July 2025 Federal Reserve staff analysis said gold’s share of official reserves had risen from below 10% in 2015 to above 23% at the report’s then-current point, while physical holdings had increased by less than 10%. The authors said much of the share increase reflected a more than 200% rise in gold’s price. These figures describe a dated valuation context, not a current reserve snapshot.

A September 2026 Federal Reserve staff analysis further cautioned against reading market value as purchases. It said the post-2024 increase in gold’s market value reflected private-sector demand and higher prices, including inflows to physical gold-backed ETFs, rather than a parallel spike in official buying. At end-2025, it valued world gold reserves at $5.1 trillion and world gold reserves excluding the United States at $4 trillion, compared with $3.9 trillion in foreign official U.S. Treasury holdings. The authors noted that the relative values largely reflected valuation changes, and that by June 2026 foreign official Treasury holdings again exceeded world gold reserves excluding the U.S. The analysis concluded that official demand alone would not have explained the 2025 gold-price surge.

Consumer demand and supply

Jewelry and technology uses, investment in bars and coins, official-sector purchases, recycling and mine output all contribute to gold’s market balance. In its December 2025 outlook, the World Gold Council expected central-bank demand to remain solid, described investment and bar-and-coin demand as significant, and expected jewelry tonnage to be weaker. It also expected mine and recycled supply to be near the prior year’s levels. Those statements were forecasts made in that report, not final counts or current outcomes.

How to read the gold-dollar relationship without overinterpreting it

  1. Identify the price series. Decide whether you are looking at a nominal dollar gold price or a price translated into a local currency. Do not compare one with the other as if they were identical.
  2. Check the dollar and yields together. Note the dollar’s direction and the movement in real yields or rate expectations. A dollar move alone does not explain a gold move.
  3. Consider the market context. Look for changes in risk appetite, financial stress, investor flows and positioning that might reinforce or counter the usual dollar and yield effects.
  4. Include physical and official demand. Consider central-bank purchases separately from changes in the market value of reserves, and account for jewelry, bars and coins, recycling and mine supply where relevant.
  5. Treat correlations as period-specific. If comparing charts, specify the gold series, dollar index or currency pair, yield measure, frequency and date range. A correlation over one period does not establish causation or guarantee the next move.

The available official analyses do not establish a single stable correlation coefficient that applies across periods. The relationship is best described qualitatively and interpreted alongside other market drivers, rather than reduced to a timeless statistic.

What dated forecasts can—and cannot—tell you

The World Gold Council’s December 2025 Gold Outlook 2026 included conditional scenarios from the starting level used in that report: a 5%–15% rise in its “shallow slip” scenario, a 15%–30% rise in its “doom loop” scenario, and a 5%–20% correction in its bearish reflation scenario. These were scenario outputs, not predictions, current price targets or guarantees.

The same report estimated central-bank demand for 2025 at 750–900 tonnes in its data context and offered a wide-ranging 2026 forecast dependent on macroeconomic and policy drivers. The 2025 figure was an estimate in a December 2025 publication, not a final result.
