But a firmer U.S. dollar and elevated Treasury yields limited the advance. Reuters reported spot gold up 0.2% to $4,152.19 an ounce and December U.S. gold futures up 0.4% to $4,180.30 by 1326 GMT—dated intraday prices, not current quotes.
Why did gold rise only modestly?
Two forces pulled in different directions. Weaker labor-market figures reduced market expectations for a near-term rate increase, which can support gold because the metal does not pay interest. At the same time, the stronger dollar and elevated 10-year Treasury yields weighed on the metal, limiting its gain, Reuters reported.
A rising dollar can make dollar-priced gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies. Higher yields can also make interest-bearing assets more attractive relative to gold. Those pressures help explain why gold rose, but only slightly, despite the softer outlook for Fed policy.
What did the jobs data show?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that payroll employment increased by 29,000 in September 2026 and unemployment stood at 4.2%. The report also revised the prior estimates down: July payroll growth changed from 21,000 to a loss of 10,000, while August growth was revised from 162,000 to 133,000. Together, the revisions reduced the two months’ reported payroll changes by 60,000.

The soft September gain and downward revisions contributed to lower market pricing for an October rate hike. They did not determine what the Federal Reserve would decide.
What did markets expect the Fed to do?
Reuters, citing CME FedWatch, reported that the market-implied probability of an October hike had fallen to 22%, from about 70% the previous week. The reported probability of a December hike remained 84%. These figures describe market pricing at the time of the October 5 report—not a Fed forecast, commitment, or decision.

The Fed’s latest decision at that point was its September 16, 2026 increase of 0.25 percentage point, which put the federal-funds target range at 3.75%–4.00%. Its statement said, “Inflation remains elevated.”
What was the next scheduled Fed catalyst?
As of the Federal Reserve calendar updated October 6, the minutes from the September FOMC meeting were scheduled for release on October 7 at 2 p.m. Eastern. The minutes had not yet been released at the time covered here, so their contents cannot be used to explain the October 5 move.

How much weight should you give the daily move?
The October 5 figures are one session’s reported intraday observations. They show a modest rise amid competing forces, not a settled direction for gold or a guarantee about the next Fed decision. Reuters also quoted Fawad Razaqzada, a market analyst at Forex.com, warning that a near-term drop was possible because the dollar had been climbing. That was the analyst’s view, not a certain price forecast.
