GNOME 47, codenamed “Denver,” adds accent colors, more adaptable layouts, stronger Files workflows, persistent remote sessions, and hardware-encoded screen recording. It was released on September 18, 2024, and is now a historical release rather than GNOME’s current stable branch. The release notes describe targeted responsiveness improvements, but publish no overall speed benchmark.

What is GNOME 47 “Denver”?

GNOME 47 is a release of the GNOME desktop environment for Linux, announced by the GNOME Project on September 18, 2024. “Denver” honors the organizers of GUADEC 2024, GNOME’s annual conference. The release announcement introduced it as “GNOME 47, ‘Denver’.”

GNOME’s release calendar lists newer stable branches, so GNOME 47 should not be mistaken for the latest version. Whether it is available or supported on a particular computer depends on its Linux distribution and release.

What changed in GNOME 47?

Accent colors and layouts for smaller screens

Appearance settings now let users choose accent colors. GNOME also refined icon sizing and other interface elements for lower-resolution displays, and updated dialogs to work better on narrow screens and mobile devices. These changes make the interface more adaptable without requiring a different desktop environment.

Files and open/save dialogs

GNOME 47’s open and save dialogs are based on Files, bringing familiar file-management features into the process of choosing or saving a file. They support zooming, sorting in icon view, renaming, previews, thumbnails on demand, and more complete search.

The Files app adds a Network view for remote locations, shows internal disks in its sidebar, and lets users remove more of the default sidebar entries. Search can also explain when results may be slower or incomplete—for example, because a location is not indexed or is remote.

Remote sessions and screen recording

Remote login sessions can remain active after a connection drops, so users can reconnect to the existing session rather than necessarily starting over. This is useful when a network interruption occurs, although it does not guarantee a connection will survive every failure or configuration.

Screen recording can use hardware encoding on Intel and AMD GPUs. GNOME says this reduces strain on the system and helps the desktop remain responsive while recording. That is the project’s qualitative description, not a published measurement for a particular computer.

GNOME’s 47 release notes also say Firefox Sync support was disabled in GNOME Web versions 47, 46.3, and 45.4 because of changes to Firefox account authentication; they give no estimate for its return. That is version-specific release-note information, not a statement about current GNOME Web behavior.
  • Calendar: The event popover was redesigned. GNOME reports that this release included almost 50 bug fixes.

Does GNOME 47 improve performance?

It includes changes intended to improve responsiveness in particular situations, but the official release and developer notes do not establish a general speedup for every Linux computer. They give no named benchmark, test method, comparison machine, or numerical result for overall GNOME 47 performance.

The specific claims are narrower: the project says hardware encoding can reduce system strain during screen recording, while GTK changes target reduced lag and improved graphical fidelity on older hardware and mobile devices. GTK also uses its Vulkan renderer by default on systems that support Vulkan. That conditional rendering change is not evidence that every device or application uses Vulkan, or that every user will see a measured improvement. See the GNOME 47 developer notes for GTK details.

Which technical changes need qualification?

Experimental fractional scaling for older X11 apps

GNOME 47 improves fractional scaling support for legacy X11 applications, but the release notes describe it as experimental and recommend it for testing only. It should not be treated as a dependable setting for everyday use.

NVIDIA and screen sharing

The NVIDIA-related work lays foundations for more reliable hardware-accelerated screen sharing and future application improvements. It is groundwork, not a promise that all screen-sharing applications gain universal, immediate support in GNOME 47.

How can you get GNOME 47?

Use packages provided and supported by your Linux distribution rather than assuming GNOME 47 can be installed as a standalone update on any system. Distribution packaging, available versions, and support periods differ; the GNOME release materials do not provide a current distribution-by-distribution availability matrix.

  1. Check your distribution’s release notes and package guidance to see whether it offers GNOME 47 and whether upgrading the desktop is supported on your system.
  2. Follow the distribution’s own upgrade or installation instructions. Do not substitute instructions for another distribution, as package names and update procedures vary.
  3. If you want to explore the release without changing your main installation, GNOME’s announcement pointed interested users to beta releases and GNOME installer images for testing. Treat these as test options, not a recommendation to replace a supported system.

At launch, GNOME named Fedora 41 and Ubuntu 24.10 as distributions expected to offer GNOME 47. Those were launch-era expectations, not a guarantee of present-day availability or support.
