That confirms the app existed then, but does not establish whether it is available or supported now, what features it had, or whether it changed driving behavior. The app is best understood as a historical attempt to address one part of a much wider safety problem: distracted driving.
What was GM’s Call Me Out app?
GM’s 2019 sustainability report identifies Call Me Out as a smartphone app launched by Chevrolet and available for Android phones. The report establishes that historical identification; it does not provide a verified feature list or an evaluation of the app’s effect on driver behavior or crashes.
Its present-day availability and support status have not been verified. It would be inaccurate to describe Call Me Out as a currently available GM app without checking a current app-store listing and support information.
Why distracted driving is broader than phone use
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines distracted driving as attention diverted from driving. Distraction can be visual, manual, or cognitive. Texting can involve all three, but drivers can also be distracted by things other than a phone. A hands-free interaction may reduce the need to look at or handle a device, but it does not remove cognitive distraction.

In the United States, NHTSA reports that distracted drivers were involved in crashes that killed 3,208 people and injured more than 315,000 people in 2024; 8% of fatal crashes that year involved distracted drivers. These figures are for 2024 and should not be conflated with NHTSA’s separate reference to 3,522 distracted-driving fatalities during 2021, an estimate cited in material drawing on NCSA data published in 2023.

How to keep phone distraction out of a drive
NHTSA recommends setting up a simple boundary: do not handle or respond to a phone while the vehicle is moving. Prepare before departure, and stop somewhere safe before dealing with anything that needs your attention.
- Before moving, silence notifications or put the phone away. Choose a location that keeps it out of easy reach, rather than relying on willpower after a message arrives.
- Set navigation and other needs before the trip. General Motors advises preparing before driving so there is less reason to interact with a device on the road.
- If a message needs a response, pull over and park first. NHTSA advises drivers to stop in a safe place before texting. A passenger can also be asked to handle messages while the driver focuses on driving.
- Speak up when a driver is distracted. GM recommends that passengers raise the issue rather than silently accepting unsafe phone use.
GM’s April 2026 driver-distraction article quotes Dan Glaser, its lead engineer for driver distraction: “A single, seemingly trivial, glance from the road, if poorly timed, can be deadly.” Glaser also advises drivers to prepare for each drive.

How Call Me Out differs from GM’s vehicle safety features
Call Me Out was identified as a smartphone app in GM’s 2019 report. It should not be confused with GM’s later in-vehicle technologies. GM’s April 2026 article describes voice and hands-free functions, Driver Attention Assist on select models, and Driver Attention Assist 2.0 on 2026 models. Those are vehicle features, not documented features of Call Me Out.
GM cautions that driver-assistance systems may not accurately detect distraction or drowsiness and do not replace the driver’s attention. Likewise, hands-free controls are not a guarantee against distraction: a driver can be mentally diverted even without looking at or holding a phone.
