Yes. Gmail for Android now lets you mark a message as read right from its notification: expand the notification if needed, then tap Mark as Read. You can clear an unread alert without opening the Gmail app.
How to mark a Gmail message as read from an Android notification
- Wait for the Gmail message notification on your Android device.
- Expand the notification if the Mark as Read action is not visible.
- Tap Mark as Read. Gmail marks the message read while leaving it in your inbox. Google announced the notification action on September 23, 2025, and says it is available to personal Google accounts, Workspace Individual subscribers, and Google Workspace customers: Google Workspace Updates.
Why “Mark as Read” may not appear
The action’s visibility can depend on the account, app, and rollout state, so its absence does not necessarily mean Gmail lacks the feature. Google’s announcement lists availability across personal accounts, Workspace Individual, and Workspace customers, but does not promise that the control will appear identically for every device or account at the same time.
The rollout was reported in stages: 9to5Google described a limited server-side rollout on June 28, 2025, then reported wider availability on August 15, 2025, observing it on devices running Gmail version 2025.08.04.x. Those reports explain why the action may not have appeared for everyone at once; they are not a current minimum-version requirement. [June report; August report]
If you do not see the control, expand the notification and check whether Gmail offers it there. Mark as Read, Archive, and Delete are different actions

Gmail’s Android settings identify Delete or Archive as the default action shown at the bottom of an expanded notification. The separate Mark as Read action is useful when you want to clear an unread status without changing where the message is stored. Gmail also lets you assign a left or right swipe in the message list to mark messages read or unread, archive, delete, move to a label, or snooze them. Use Mark as Read for a message you have already dealt with or do not need to open. It is a quick triage action, but it does not show the full message context. Open the email first when you need to review its contents before deciding whether to archive, delete, or take another action.
