GlobalSign announced a free PDF Signing Tool in 2011 for trying digital signatures on PDF files. The available sources do not confirm that this original tool is still available or supported. GlobalSign’s current document-signing certificate offering is a separate product, not evidence that the old free tool remains online.
What GlobalSign’s free PDF Signing Tool was
In an announcement dated February 1, 2011, GlobalSign described the tool as a way for individuals and organizations to test digital signatures on PDFs with little or no upfront investment. The announcement characterized the tool as free; that describes its historical launch, not its present-day availability. Dark Reading’s republication of GlobalSign’s announcement includes the original description.
A separate Japanese-language announcement from GMO GlobalSign Holdings, dated January 24, 2011, described a browser-based tool that could recognize certificates users already had. It also said test certificates with a 90-day validity period were available. Those details are historical and do not establish what a current service supports. GMO GlobalSign Holdings’ announcement lists the launch-era details.
What the historical tool required
GlobalSign’s historical PDF Signing Tool Guide says the tool worked only with Internet Explorer and signed PDF documents only. It required a certificate accessible from the Windows trust store, or from a USB token or smart card with Windows-compatible drivers. Users needed an internet connection for online revocation checks or timestamping when the selected certificate supported those features.

The guide’s launch-era recommended setup was Windows XP, Vista, or 7 and Internet Explorer 7.0 or later. These are historical requirements, not a current compatibility recommendation.
How the documented signing flow worked
The guide instructed users to select a certificate, optionally choose a timestamp, and select a PDF. It also described optional visible signature details, such as a reason, location, contact information, or image. This describes the documented legacy workflow only; it should not be taken as evidence that the tool can still be used.

Is the free PDF Signing Tool still available?
The sources available here do not establish whether the original free PDFSigner remains available or supported. GlobalSign has a page titled PDF Signing Demo, described as a demo for digitally signing and certifying PDFs, but that page does not resolve the old tool’s status. Do not assume the demo is the same service as the 2011 free tool.
How the old tool differs from GlobalSign’s current offering
GlobalSign’s current Document Signing page describes a certificate-based product for digitally signing Microsoft Office and PDF documents. It describes certificates issued to an individual or organization, with a hardware token and timestamping. That is a distinct credential-based offering, not confirmation that the historical free test tool is still operating. Check the live product page for current terms and availability.
