For a broader change, use a Windows theme, which can also adjust window colors and sounds. These steps change appearance only; they do not turn Windows 10 into Windows 11.
What makes a wallpaper feel Sun Valley-inspired?
Microsoft’s Windows 11 desktop guidance describes a simple, bold design that draws attention to the center. It says, “The centered taskbar and Start menu are highlighted by this design.” That makes centered or centrally focused imagery a useful starting point when styling a Windows 10 desktop, especially if you have centered your taskbar icons.
This is visual inspiration, not a promise that a wallpaper reproduces Windows 11’s interface. An image cannot add Windows 11 features or change how Windows 10 works. Nor does Microsoft prescribe one universal image resolution: the visible crop depends on your display and background settings. Choose an image whose main subject remains clear when fitted to your screen.

Choose a picture, slideshow, or complete theme
The right option depends on whether you want only a new image or a wider set of appearance changes.

Windows themes can combine several appearance elements, but individual themes do not necessarily contain identical components. Microsoft’s Windows themes guidance explains how to find and apply them.

Set a wallpaper in Windows 10
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Personalize, or open Settings > Personalization > Background.
- Under the background options, choose Picture for one image or Slideshow to rotate images from a folder.
- If you choose Picture, select a built-in image or use the option to browse for an image file. If you choose Slideshow, select the folder containing the pictures you want to rotate.
- Check how the image sits on your desktop. If the important subject is cropped or poorly positioned, choose another image or adjust the available fit setting.
Microsoft documents these background controls in its guide to changing the desktop background in Windows. The exact appearance of a wallpaper can vary with screen size and the selected fit.
Apply a Windows theme for a more coordinated look
- Open Settings > Personalization > Themes.
- Choose an installed theme to apply it.
- To find more themes, use the Microsoft Store option on the Themes page if it is available on your PC.
- After applying a theme, review the background and other appearance settings to confirm they match the look you want.
A theme can change more than the desktop image, so use a single picture instead if you want to keep your current colors and sounds. Microsoft reported on December 11, 2025, that the Store’s Themes department had over 400 themes, including over 35 new additions. That was a dated Microsoft figure, not a guaranteed live count for the Store today.

For technical context, Microsoft’s theme file format reference describes a shareable theme as including a .theme file together with associated files such as background pictures, screen savers, and icons. That does not mean every theme download includes all of those components.
Keep the makeover separate from Windows support
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. A wallpaper or theme changes the desktop’s appearance; it does not restore support or security updates.
