GitLab rated it 9.9 on the CVSS 3.1 scale and advised administrators of affected self-managed installations to upgrade promptly. The fixed releases named in the announcement are 17.1.7, 17.2.5, and 17.3.2.
What GitLab disclosed about CVE-2024-6678
GitLab’s critical patch release announcement, published September 11, 2024, describes the issue as “Execute environment stop actions as the owner of the stop action job.” It says that, in certain circumstances, an attacker could trigger a pipeline as an arbitrary user. GitLab assigned the vulnerability CVE-2024-6678 and a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.9.
The announcement provides a brief impact description, not a detailed explanation of the underlying cause or instructions for exploiting the flaw. It does not report an exploitation count.
Affected GitLab versions and fixed releases
GitLab listed the following affected ranges for Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE), with the corresponding fixed patch release:

These are the ranges stated in GitLab’s 2024 announcement; they should not be read as a current inventory of every vulnerable or supported version. To assess a particular installation, confirm its edition, exact version, and deployment type, then check GitLab’s current guidance for the applicable supported update path.

- Identify the GitLab edition, exact installed version, and deployment type for the instance you administer.
- Compare the installed version with the applicable affected range in the table. If it falls within a listed range, treat the installation as affected by the announcement.
- Follow GitLab’s current upgrade guidance for that deployment and update to the latest applicable version. The announcement’s specific fixed targets were 17.1.7, 17.2.5, and 17.3.2, and GitLab strongly recommended that affected installations upgrade as soon as possible.
GitLab also said in the September 11, 2024 announcement that GitLab.com was already running a patched version and GitLab Dedicated customers did not need to take action. Those were status statements made on the announcement date; they do not verify the present status of a particular service or installation.
