GitHub Spark turned plain-English descriptions into TypeScript and React web apps, with tools to refine and publish them. That describes Spark’s former workflow: GitHub stopped accepting new users and creating new apps on August 4, 2026. If you already deployed an app, GitHub says it will continue to work after Spark’s retirement.
What GitHub Spark did
Spark was GitHub’s managed workflow for creating, editing, and publishing web apps. You could begin by describing an app in natural language; GitHub’s tutorial says Spark generated TypeScript and React. The plain-English prompt was a starting point, not a guarantee that the result was ready for production or would need no review.
After generation, the documented workflow let builders iterate with more prompts, visual controls, or code edits. Users could also provide image references and Markdown context to help shape a build. Once ready, they could publish the app through Spark.
Can you still use GitHub Spark?
No—not to start a new Spark project. GitHub’s August 4, 2026 deprecation announcement says Spark on github.com stopped accepting new users and creating new apps that day. Existing users could access Spark through August 31, 2026 to export their apps.

What happens to an app you already built?
GitHub says apps that were already deployed continue to work after the Spark service is retired. In its August 4, 2026 changelog, GitHub stated: “Apps you’ve already deployed will continue to work after GitHub Spark is retired.” The announcement describes this assurance for deployed apps; it does not say that the retired Spark editor remains available for ongoing changes.
Sharing and permissions in the former workflow
Historically, Spark let users publish apps privately or share them more broadly with an organization or GitHub users. Shared access could be read-only or allow writing. GitHub’s tutorial warned that people with broader access might be able to change data stored by the app. These were capabilities of the former workflow, not options for creating or sharing a new Spark app today.

Do Spark apps that use AI still work?
It depends on whether the app uses Spark’s llm() function. GitHub Models, the inference service that powered that function, retired on July 30, 2026. GitHub says apps calling llm() need another inference provider to preserve those AI features. You must supply your own API key and manage the provider’s billing. Apps that do not use llm() are not affected by this particular inference-service retirement.
What should you use instead of Spark?
GitHub points builders to GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Copilot CLI, and the GitHub Copilot app. These are GitHub’s named directions after Spark, not confirmed one-to-one replacements. The available announcement does not establish that any of them bundles Spark’s former combination of app generation, editing, and hosting on equivalent terms.

| Workflow | What GitHub’s announcement establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot in VS Code | GitHub names it as an environment for building and refining apps. | That it includes Spark-equivalent hosted app generation or deployment. |
| Copilot CLI | GitHub names it as an environment for building and refining apps. | That it provides Spark’s former visual editing or managed hosting workflow. |
| GitHub Copilot app | GitHub names it as an environment for building and refining apps. | That it offers Spark’s former bundled app creation and hosting on equivalent terms. |
Choose among these based on where you want to work and how much setup you are prepared to handle. Before moving an app, confirm how your chosen workflow handles code changes, deployment or hosting, and any AI inference provider and associated API key or billing. GitHub’s current Copilot plans page lists available plans and usage details; pricing and included usage can change, so check the live page for current terms.
