GitHub announced Copilot Extensions for JetBrains IDEs on December 2, 2024, in public preview. The feature lets you ask third-party tools or private services questions from Copilot Chat without leaving the IDE. The original setup used the GitHub Copilot plugin and Marketplace extensions; current compatibility and access requirements may differ, so check the latest guidance before installing.
What Copilot Extensions do in JetBrains
A Copilot Extension connects Copilot Chat to an external tool or service. Instead of switching between your IDE and another application, you can address an extension in natural language to query its capabilities or data. GitHub’s announcement named IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and WebStorm as examples of supported JetBrains IDEs at launch. See the December 2, 2024 launch announcement.
Extensions are integrations, not a general-purpose replacement for the Copilot plugin. GitHub App Copilot Extensions run server-side and can be used across Copilot Chat on VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, GitHub.com and GitHub Mobile. VS Code Chat Participants can provide a similar chat experience, but are specific to VS Code and run locally. Details are on GitHub’s Copilot Extensions page.
How to use an Extension in the original JetBrains workflow
The December 2024 public-preview workflow required GitHub Copilot access, a compatible JetBrains IDE, the latest GitHub Copilot plugin and at least one installed extension. The launch instructions were:

JetBrains IDEs listed by GitHub
GitHub’s current documentation lists IntelliJ IDEA (Ultimate, Community and Educational), Android Studio, CLion, Code With Me Guest, DataGrip, DataSpell, GoLand, JetBrains Client, MPS, PhpStorm, PyCharm (Professional, Community and Educational), Rider, RubyMine, RustRover and WebStorm. The plugin’s compatible IDE versions are version-sensitive; verify your exact version in the JetBrains Marketplace plugin listing before installing or updating.
Check support for older IDE versions
A recent Microsoft for Java Developers support notice says support for JetBrains IDE 2025.1.x is scheduled to end in the next few months. It identifies 2025.2.x as the minimum supported IDE version going forward and recommends 2026.1 or later. The notice says an already-installed plugin is expected to keep working after support ends, but future plugin updates may not be compatible, and that IDE line will no longer receive fixes, performance improvements or new features. Because the announced end date is relative and can change, check the notice and Marketplace listing for the current status of your IDE version.

Plans and organization requirements
GitHub’s current documentation says Copilot Free offers limited access and a paid Copilot plan provides full access. GitHub’s Extensions guidance lists Copilot Pro for individuals. Business and Enterprise customers need a GitHub plan type that supports installing and using GitHub Apps at organization level, and the Copilot Extensions policy must be enabled. GitHub Enterprise Server is not supported. Availability can change with plan and policy updates, so confirm the current requirements in GitHub’s Extensions documentation and with your organization administrator.
Organizations and enterprises can create private extensions for internal tools and data. GitHub says those extensions are visible and usable only by the organization or enterprise that created them and must be installed at organization level. Access to proprietary resources remains subject to the organization’s policies and the permissions granted.

What an Extension can access
GitHub says an extension author receives, at minimum, your GitHub ID and your chat history with that specific extension and general threads. One extension does not receive thread history with other extensions. Additional information may be shared depending on the permissions the extension requests. Before installation, review the permission prompt; permissions can include organization or repository context and must be authorized by you or an organization owner.
Evaluate the publisher as well as the feature
Marketplace extensions are third-party products and can vary in quality. GitHub reviews published extensions and requires Verified Creators, and it verifies permissions; some other listing information is self-attested. Marketplace presence is not a guarantee of uniform security, quality or stability. GitHub encourages customers to conduct their own security review and install only extensions from publishers they trust.

When choosing an extension, compare what task it actually supports, the data and permissions it requests, the publisher’s identity and security disclosures, and whether your plan permits its use. GitHub says most Marketplace extensions are free, but some require payment for a publisher’s service; a Copilot plan is still required.
Copilot Extensions versus the later JetBrains AI Chat route
The December 2024 announcement concerns Extensions used through the GitHub Copilot JetBrains plugin. Separately, JetBrains described a GitHub Copilot agent selectable from the JetBrains AI Chat agent picker in June 2026, authenticated through OAuth with a GitHub account. That is a later, distinct way to access Copilot in JetBrains AI Chat, not another name for the original Extensions workflow. The available documentation does not establish complete feature parity between the two routes; see the JetBrains blog notice for the later agent integration.
