What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Git’s first commit was made by Linus Torvalds on April 7, 2005. The Linux kernel project needed a replacement after its relationship with BitKeeper broke down and BitKeeper’s free-of-charge status was revoked. Git’s distributed design let developers work with repository history locally, then choose where and when to share their work.
Why was Git created?
Before Git, Linux kernel development relied on patches and compressed archives. The project adopted BitKeeper in 2002, but in 2005 its relationship with BitKeeper’s commercial developer broke down and the tool’s free-of-charge status was revoked. That change prompted Torvalds to build a replacement suited to the kernel’s development needs. The Git project’s short history describes that transition and the workflow that came before it.
The first commit arrived on April 7, 2005. GitLab’s 20-year retrospective records its abbreviated identifier as e83c5163316 and its message as “Initial revision of ‘git’, the information manager from hell.” This was an early implementation, not yet the familiar command-line tool: it consisted of several standalone commands and did not yet have a single git command.
What was different about Git’s design?
Git was built around the idea that a developer could have a complete repository locally rather than depending on a central server for every operation. That made it possible to inspect history and develop offline, then decide later where to publish or share changes. In a GitHub interview published April 7, 2025 and updated June 12, 2025, Torvalds described the appeal this way: “you can work with Git purely locally and then later if you want to make it available in any other place it’s so easy.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The official Git book identifies the project’s initial goals as speed, simple design, strong support for non-linear development, full distribution, and efficient handling of large projects such as the Linux kernel. Those goals connect: local repository history supports independent work, while branching and merging support parallel lines of development. A distributed workflow does not require developers to publish every experiment to a shared host.
How did Git develop after its first commit?
The project moved quickly from the initial implementation toward a usable release. GitLab’s timeline records Junio Hamano becoming maintainer on July 26, 2005, followed by Git 1.0 on December 21, 2005. Along the way, additions such as git-merge and shorthand for remote repositories helped make collaboration more practical.

That early timeline matters because Git was not finished on the day of its first commit. The anniversary marks the beginning of a project that was actively shaped into a maintainable tool and release, rather than the arrival of a complete modern system in one step.
What do Git’s first 20 years say about its scale?
GitLab’s April 2025 retrospective gives a dated snapshot of the project as of Git 2.49: 56,721 commits, more than 2,000 individual contributors, and 60 major releases. These figures describe Git’s own development history, not the number of people or organizations using Git worldwide. No attributable global adoption percentage is established by these figures.

Those numbers show a long-running, broadly contributed open-source project, but they do not prove Git transformed software development by itself. In the anniversary interview, Torvalds was cautious about making that kind of sweeping claim. Git is one important tool in software collaboration; its history is better understood through the specific design problem it addressed and the workflows it enabled.
What is still being discussed in Git development?
A September 2025 preview of Git Merge topics from GitHub pointed to continuing engineering discussions, not guaranteed roadmap commitments. The topics included performance, usability, new backends, SHA-256 interoperability, client usability, and newer settings such as local-first applications and genomic research. Community discussion also continues to surface practical challenges around large binary files, monorepo scaling, and ease of use.

These themes show that a successful core design does not eliminate trade-offs. Git’s history, branching, and distributed workflow remain central, while maintainers and users continue to examine how the tool performs and feels across different project sizes and use cases.
