Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use git revert <commit> to undo a committed change while preserving shared history. Git creates a new commit that reverses the target commit’s patch; it does not erase the original commit. This is usually the safest approach for changes already pushed or shared.
What does git revert do?
git revert applies the inverse of one or more commits and records the result as new commit(s). The earlier commit remains in the repository’s history. Because the operation creates a commit, Git normally requires a clean working tree relative to HEAD; save unrelated edits before starting. See the Git project’s git-revert documentation.
Reverting is not guaranteed to restore the entire project to how it looked before the target commit. Later commits may depend on, modify, or build upon its changes. Review the resulting diff to confirm it represents the state you intend.

Find the commit to undo:
git log --oneline. Copy its hash, or use another valid commit expression. -
Run
git revert <commit>, replacing the placeholder with the target hash or expression. For example, the Git manual usesgit revert HEAD~3to target the fourth-last commit. -
Review the proposed change and commit message. Git prepares a message that refers to the reverted commit. The Git project documentation strongly recommends explaining why the original change is being reverted. Save the message to finish the revert.
How to review or combine reversions before committing
Use --no-commit when you want to inspect the inverse changes or combine multiple reversions into a single commit:

git revert --no-commit <commit>
git diff --cached
The inverse changes are applied to the working tree and index without an immediate commit. Check the staged diff, make any necessary adjustments, then commit when the result is ready.
For a range, the Git manual gives git revert -n master~5..master~2 as an example. Range boundaries and commit dependencies can make the outcome less obvious than reverting one commit, so check which commits the expression selects and inspect the full diff before committing.
How to handle a revert conflict
A conflict means Git could not apply an inverse change cleanly, often because later edits changed the same area. Resolve the files to the intended final content rather than choosing a side automatically.
-
Inspect the conflicted files and edit them to the desired result.

git revert --quitclears the sequencer state but leaves the current index and working tree as they are.
How to revert a merge commit
A merge commit has multiple parents, so Git needs you to identify the mainline parent to retain. Use -m with the parent number:
git revert -m 1 <merge-commit>
Parent numbering starts at 1. Confirm which parent represents the line of development you want to keep by inspecting the merge’s parent history; do not select a number by habit.
A merge revert also changes how later merges behave. It records that the tree changes introduced by that merge are unwanted. If you later merge the same line again, Git brings in only commits that are not ancestors of the reverted merge. This lasting history effect can make a subsequent merge appear to omit changes that were already included in the original merge. The Git revert manual explains this behavior.

Revert, reset, or restore: which should you use?
| Command | What it changes | Creates a new commit? | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
git revert |
Applies an inverse patch while keeping the original commit in history. | Yes, unless you use --no-commit first. |
Undoing a committed change, especially one already shared. |
git reset |
Moves the current branch reference; its effect on the index and working tree depends on the options used. | No. | Moving a branch to a different commit when changing branch history is appropriate. |
git restore |
Replaces selected file content in the working tree or index. | No. | Restoring file content rather than recording a reversal of a commit. |
Reset and restore do not substitute for a history-preserving revert. Some forms can discard uncommitted work; in particular, treat git reset --hard as destructive. Check the Git revert documentation and Git merge documentation for the distinctions and cautions.
Why reverting a pushed commit is usually safer than rewriting history
Once a commit has been shared, collaborators may have based their work on it. Reverting adds a corrective commit without moving the shared branch backward, so others can see both the original change and its reversal. Resetting and then force-pushing rewrites the branch history and can disrupt collaborators. For a shared change, prefer a revert unless your team has agreed on a history rewrite and coordinated it.
Related merge recovery: git merge --abort
git merge --abort is for stopping an in-progress merge, not for undoing a completed commit. Git warns that it may not reconstruct earlier uncommitted changes reliably if the merge began with such changes. Starting merges with a clean working tree—or committing or stashing first—makes recovery safer. See the Git merge documentation.
