GIFT Nifty replaced SGX Nifty on July 3, 2023. The Nifty derivatives began trading and matching on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gujarat, through the NSE IX–SGX GIFT Connect. In the arrangement SGX described at launch, SGX-member orders route to NSE IX for execution, while SGX manages clearing and settlement. The change was chiefly to the venue and market infrastructure—not evidence that the contracts represent unrelated Nifty exposures.
What changed?
The transition took effect with the start of full-scale GIFT Connect operations on July 3, 2023. The products formerly known as SGX Nifty were rebranded GIFT Nifty and moved to NSE IX in GIFT City. NSE IX announced the transition on June 19, 2023, and SGX described the Connect arrangement at launch.

How the GIFT Connect route works
GIFT Connect links SGX member access with trading on NSE IX. SGX’s launch notice says orders from SGX members are routed to NSE IX, where trading and matching take place. SGX manages clearing and settlement for the Connect contracts described in that notice. These are distinct functions: the venue that matches trades is not necessarily the entity responsible for clearing and settlement.

Exchange materials also describe direct participation through GIFT IFSC members. They do not establish a complete, current list of eligible jurisdictions, account types or broker arrangements. Traders should confirm their own access route with their broker and consult current exchange and regulatory rules.
Which contracts and hours should traders check?
Index products
The initial Connect suite comprised futures and options on four indices: Nifty 50, Nifty Bank, Nifty IT and Nifty Financial Services. NSE IX’s July 2023 release and an NSE IFSC circular dated June 17, 2022 identify this initial family. That launch-era list does not establish the complete current product lineup, nor does it supply all current contract terms.

Market schedule
NSE IX’s April 2024 FAQ states general market timings of 06:30 to 02:45 the next day, India Standard Time, with a 06:15 pre-open. It tells members to use the exchange’s timing page for product-specific hours. Because schedules can vary by product and change over time, check the current schedule before placing an order.
Contract specifications
Do not infer today’s lot size, expiry calendar, multiplier or other contract terms from the initial product announcement. Use current NSE IX specifications and circulars for the particular contract you intend to trade.

What traders should not infer from the move
- A guaranteed signal for India’s cash-market open: Extended trading access does not establish that GIFT Nifty reliably predicts the next Indian cash-market opening level.
- A risk-free price difference: A difference between a GIFT Nifty quote and another market price is not, by itself, a guaranteed arbitrage opportunity. The transition announcements establish market infrastructure, not a trading strategy or outcome.
- Uniform liquidity: NSE IX reported more than 214,000 contracts and US$8.5 billion in turnover on July 24, 2023, describing it as a record first-session single-day activity figure at that time. It also reported 33,570 contracts and US$1.21 billion on July 3, 2023, the first day of full-scale operations. These are historical exchange-reported figures, not measures of current liquidity at every time, for every contract or for every order size.
How to verify the details before trading
- Check the current product listing: Consult NSE IX’s official market information to confirm the contract is listed.
- Confirm the product-specific schedule: Use NSE IX’s current timing information rather than relying only on the FAQ’s general hours.
- Read the current contract specifications and circulars: Verify expiry, lot size, multiplier and any other terms for the exact instrument.
- Confirm access and operational arrangements with your broker: Ask which member route applies to your account and what eligibility and settlement arrangements govern your trades.
Why the distinction matters
For traders comparing older SGX Nifty references with current market information, the essential point is to distinguish the old label from the current arrangement: GIFT Nifty is traded and matched on NSE IX in GIFT City, while the SGX role described at launch includes routing SGX-member orders and managing clearing and settlement for Connect contracts. The market hours, contract terms and access details still require current, product-specific checks.
