Choose Ghost of Yōtei if you have a PS5 and want Atsu’s standalone revenge-and-redemption story, Ezo to explore, and combat built around switching weapons. Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut if you prefer Jin Sakai’s struggle between samurai tradition and the Ghost, want to match katana stances to enemy types, or need a PS4 or PC version. They are related open-world samurai games, but Yōtei is not a continuation of Jin’s story and you do not need to play Tsushima first. This comparison reflects the games and US edition information available in November 2026; it is about fit, not an objective quality ranking.
The practical differences extend beyond their protagonists. The games differ in combat approach, setting and bundled content, and their current platform options are not the same. Both have Legends co-op, while physical buyers need to check what each edition actually includes. The right choice depends on what you want to play, the hardware you own and whether a particular expansion or co-op mode matters to you.

| Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut | Players who want Jin’s story, enemy-specific katana stances, Iki Island, or PS4/PC access | Stone, Water and Wind stances; includes Iki Island and Legends | $69.99 US listing; also listed in PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog | PS4, PS5, PC | Nov 2026 |
Prices and catalog access are US PlayStation listing observations, not fixed prices or a guarantee of continued subscription availability. Check the current store listing for your region before buying. Prices, edition contents, subscription access and retailer stock can change; do not assume a US digital storefront listing matches a local store or disc seller.
Fast decision: if you need PS4 or PC compatibility, Tsushima is the straightforward choice from these current official listings. If you own a PS5 and want to start a new, separate protagonist’s story, Yōtei is the one to consider. If you are deciding between editions rather than games, compare the expansions and physical format below before paying.

Should I play Ghost of Tsushima before Ghost of Yōtei?
No. Sucker Punch describes Yōtei as a standalone experience set about 300 years after Tsushima. Its protagonist is Atsu, not Jin Sakai, so Tsushima is optional background rather than a prerequisite. You can choose Yōtei first without needing to catch up on Jin’s plot, and playing Tsushima does not turn Yōtei into a direct continuation of his personal story.
The distinction matters if you are choosing based on story continuity. Tsushima follows Jin as he defends his home against Mongol forces while deciding how far to depart from samurai tradition. Yōtei follows Atsu as she pursues the people who killed her family across northern Japan; its official framing also emphasizes healing and redemption. The games share a broad setting and series identity, but the different central characters and conflicts are stronger guides to the experience than expecting one story to lead into the other.
For a player who likes Jin’s particular dilemma, choose Tsushima because it is his story. For someone interested in Atsu’s pursuit and the healing and redemption themes associated with it, Yōtei stands on its own. If you want to play both, there is no required order established by the standalone premise: pick the setting and protagonist that interest you now, then treat the other game as a separate adventure.
Which game has the combat style I’m looking for?
Pick Tsushima if you like learning katana stances for specific enemy types. Pick Yōtei if you want to switch among distinct weapons as part of your fighting toolkit. Neither approach establishes an objectively better combat system; the useful question is which kind of decision-making sounds more appealing to you. The official descriptions support a comparison of emphasis, not a score for depth, difficulty or superiority.
Tsushima’s stances make enemy matchups a central consideration. PlayStation’s guide identifies Stone for swordsmen, Water for shield users and Wind for spear users. Those examples make the system’s basic appeal clear: observe what kind of opponent you face, then use the stance associated with that matchup. If you enjoy a focused katana identity and adapting that weapon’s stance to the enemy, Tsushima is the more obvious fit.
Yōtei offers a wider set of weapon types: katana, dual katana, ōdachi, yari and kusarigama, alongside bows, a matchlock and quickfire tools. That variety makes weapon switching a defining difference, rather than simply offering more katana stances. If you would rather have distinct weapon categories available as part of your approach, its listed toolkit may be more appealing. The question is whether that range sounds exciting to you, not whether a larger list automatically makes combat better.
There is no supported like-for-like measure of combat depth, difficulty or how often players should switch weapons. Nor is there a comparative performance benchmark that settles which feels better to play. Without hands-on testing, it is more accurate to frame this as a preference choice: Tsushima emphasizes stance selection for enemy types, while Yōtei emphasizes learning and switching among different weapon types. Do not use a claim that one is objectively more challenging or more fluid as a buying reason unless you can confirm it for yourself.
How do the worlds and activities compare?
Both games pair an open-world setting with exploration, but their named destinations and activities differ. Tsushima Director’s Cut adds an Iki Island story to its Tsushima setting; Yōtei takes Atsu through Ezo, with activities such as camps, travelers, shrines, onsen, bamboo strikes and sumi-e painting. If you want an additional story location in Tsushima, Iki is part of Director’s Cut. If the listed Ezo activities appeal to you, Yōtei offers a different collection of places and pursuits to discover.
Yōtei also lists a spyglass among its exploration features. Its presentation options include Kurosawa, Miike and Watanabe modes, as well as a Japanese-voiceover samurai cinema option. These are available ways to shape the presentation, not evidence that every player will prefer one mode. They can matter if a particular cinematic style or Japanese-language presentation is part of what you are looking for, but they do not establish that the underlying story or open world is better.
Think about the specific activities you want rather than assuming the worlds are interchangeable. Tsushima’s Director’s Cut provides the Iki Island addition alongside the main Tsushima setting. Yōtei’s described activities include stops that range from shrines and onsen to bamboo strikes and painting. Those details help distinguish the kinds of exploration the official material names, but they do not prove that one game has more total content.

No reliable, equal-method map-size or completion-time comparison is established. That means there is no sound basis for claiming one world is larger or will take a specific number of extra hours to finish. Completion time can also depend on what a player chooses to do, so avoid treating an unsupported hour count as a promise. If map scale or total playtime is a deciding factor, look for a clearly comparable measurement rather than relying on a confident-sounding estimate.

For a fuller single-player package, compare Tsushima Director’s Cut with Yōtei Complete Edition rather than treating the base-game names as equivalent editions. The two packages bundle different story content, and both include Legends co-op. The extra content is not the same: Tsushima Director’s Cut contains Iki Island, while Yōtei Complete Edition contains Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted, as well as Legends.
| Edition | Included content identified by PlayStation | Buying detail |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut | Iki Island story and Legends | US listing observed at $69.99; also listed for PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog access |
| Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition | Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and Legends | US listing observed at $69.99 |
| Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition Upgrade | Paid upgrade for existing Yōtei owners to get the Complete Edition’s additional paid content | US listing observed at $14.99 |
Prices checked Nov 2026. These are US storefront observations and can change; they are not a promise of a particular retailer price. PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog access is another route listed for Tsushima Director’s Cut, but catalog inclusion is a subscription benefit, not the same thing as purchasing a permanent copy. Confirm current eligibility and terms in your region before relying on it.
Yōtei’s October 2026 update also includes changes available to all owners without buying the upgrade. Do not confuse those free-update changes with the paid Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted content. If you already own Yōtei, compare the separate $14.99 US upgrade listing with the value you place on those named additions; do not repurchase the Complete Edition on the assumption the upgrade is mandatory to receive every update.
When choosing between the two expanded packages, decide which story addition sounds more relevant to you. Director’s Cut is the package to consider for Iki Island, while Complete Edition is the Yōtei bundle that lists Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted. Legends is included in both identified editions, but its modes and player count are not identical. Check the exact listing for your platform and territory, especially if buying a code or disc rather than directly through PlayStation Store.
Is Ghost of Yōtei on PC or PS4?
As of November 2026, PlayStation lists Yōtei for PS5 and PS5 Pro; the current official listings do not include a PS4 or PC version. Do not buy it on the assumption that a PC release has been announced. A future platform announcement could change the situation, but none is promised by the current listings referenced here.
Tsushima Director’s Cut is available for PS4, PS5 and PC, including through Steam and Epic. That makes it the practical choice if you do not own a PS5 or want to play on PC. On PC, Legends and the PlayStation overlay require a PlayStation account, so factor in that account requirement if you are primarily interested in its online mode.
For a PS4 Tsushima disc owner considering the PS5 digital upgrade, the disc must be inserted to play the upgraded game, and the PS5 needs a disc drive. Check your console and edition before purchasing an upgrade; a disc-based entitlement will not work on a PS5 without a disc drive. This is especially important if you own a disc-less PS5 and are shopping for an upgrade tied to a physical PS4 copy.
Platform availability can settle the question before story or combat preferences come into play. If you only have a PS4 or gaming PC, Tsushima is the relevant option from the current listings. If you own a PS5 and both protagonists interest you, use story, weapon preferences and included content to make the choice. Do not infer a Yōtei PC version from Tsushima’s PC availability; they are separate release listings.

What do the physical editions actually contain?
PlayStation lists a Yōtei Standard Edition Blu-ray. The Yōtei Collector’s Edition includes physical collectibles, but its listing categorizes the full game as a digital item. If you specifically want a game disc, do not assume the Collector’s Edition supplies one; check the exact edition listing and your console’s disc-drive requirements. “Collector’s Edition” describes a bundle, not necessarily a physical copy of the game.

A limited-edition Yōtei DualSense is an optional collector accessory, not a requirement for either game. For any purchase, verify the platform, edition and included game entitlement rather than relying only on the product name or the word “physical.” If your priority is a disc, look specifically for the Ghost of Yōtei Standard Edition PS5 physical game and confirm the listing says Blu-ray. If you want Tsushima on PS5, search for Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 and check whether the listing is for a disc, digital code or another platform.
These checks are useful even when the product photo looks clear: physical collectibles and a physical game are separate things. Confirm that the edition is for your console generation, check whether it provides a disc or a digital entitlement, and make sure your hardware can use that format. Retailer stock and bundle contents may vary, so rely on the exact current listing rather than an old product description.
Can I play co-op in either game?
Yes. Both games offer Legends co-op, though their modes are not identical. Tsushima Legends has Samurai, Hunter, Ronin and Assassin classes, with story, survival and raid play. Yōtei Legends is now a free update for Yōtei owners and supports two to four online players. If you are choosing mainly for cooperative play, compare the named classes and modes in Tsushima with Yōtei’s stated player range rather than treating “Legends” as one identical feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOlder pre-release information saying Yōtei Legends would not be available at launch is historical; it does not describe its current status. The current PlayStation Yōtei page identifies Legends as part of the experience following a free update. This is distinct from the paid Complete Edition content: the update is available to Yōtei owners, while Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted are the named paid additions in Complete Edition.
Console online play has PlayStation Plus requirements. If co-op is your main reason to buy, check the current platform’s online-play terms before purchasing, since subscription requirements and availability can vary. Also verify that the specific mode you want is supported on your chosen platform. For PC Tsushima players, remember that Legends and the PlayStation overlay require a PlayStation account, in addition to checking the current service terms for online play.
For solo players, Legends should not be the only basis for choosing unless you expect to use it. The central single-player comparisons remain Jin’s samurai-versus-Ghost conflict and stance combat versus Atsu’s separate story, Ezo exploration and multiple weapon types. For friends planning to play together, the stated two-to-four online player support for Yōtei Legends is a useful concrete detail, while Tsushima’s class names and story, survival and raid formats describe its distinct cooperative offering.
Which game offers the accessibility options I need?
Yōtei documents subtitle backdrops and speaker names, color and large-text options, and enhanced visibility for Guiding Wind. Sucker Punch’s October 2026 update also adds a high-contrast option. These named settings give prospective players specific items to check, rather than a blanket guarantee that the game will meet every accessibility need.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Tsushima’s PlayStation listing identifies accessibility features, but that alone does not support an overall winner across every accommodation. If a specific setting is essential—such as subtitle presentation, text size or contrast—confirm that exact feature in the relevant game’s current accessibility information before buying. A broad label is not a substitute for checking whether the game has the particular control, display or readability option you need.
If you are comparing the games for another player, make a short list of must-have accommodations first, then verify each one on the current product page or in the game’s settings information. The details named for Yōtei should not be read as proof that Tsushima lacks every similar option, and Tsushima’s general listing should not be read as proof that it includes a particular setting. There is no single accessibility winner established here; the useful comparison is feature by feature.
Which one should I buy on PS5?
On PS5, make the decision by story, combat preference and edition—not by assuming one game is a direct upgrade over the other. Choose Yōtei for Atsu, Ezo and a varied weapon-switching approach; choose Tsushima Director’s Cut for Jin, the samurai-versus-Ghost conflict, stance-based katana combat and Iki Island.

If you are undecided, remember that Tsushima is not required to understand Yōtei. Conversely, if the historical setting of Jin’s story or the added Iki Island chapter is the draw, Yōtei’s standalone status does not make it a substitute for that experience. They offer different protagonists and story conflicts, so a preference for one premise can be a better guide than asking which is the “next” game in Jin’s story.

For value, compare the current regional listings and the content you actually want: the US prices and PlayStation Plus catalog access cited above are snapshots, not permanent offers. A player who already owns Yōtei should compare the separate upgrade price with its paid additions. A player who has not bought either game should compare each complete edition’s named content, platform and format. If Tsushima is currently accessible through your Plus catalog, verify that it remains in the catalog and account for the fact that access depends on the subscription terms.
Use a simple order of questions: Which console or computer do you own? Which character and story appeal to you? Would you rather adapt katana stances to enemy types or switch among distinct weapons? Do you want Iki Island, or Yōtei’s named Complete Edition additions? Do you need a disc or a digital copy? This sequence prevents a platform mismatch or edition assumption from outweighing the features you actually care about.
For a PS5 buyer who wants a standalone new story and the broadest listed weapon variety, Yōtei is the natural recommendation. For a buyer who wants Jin’s original conflict, enemy-specific katana stances, Iki Island, or access on PS4 or PC, Tsushima Director’s Cut is the better fit. These are recommendations by preference and availability, not a claim that either game wins every category.

Sony Group Corporation reported 3.3 million global cumulative Yōtei sell-through units as of November 2, 2025, and 13.0 million combined PlayStation-and-PC Tsushima sell-through units as of August 11, 2024. Sony’s figures are sell-through estimates and exclude add-on content. The dates matter: these figures are not measurements taken at the same time.

Those totals also have different platform coverage, so they are not a current head-to-head sales contest and do not establish which game is better. Tsushima’s reported number combines PlayStation and PC units at its stated cutoff, while Yōtei’s figure is global cumulative sell-through at a later date. Neither number tells you whether the story, combat system or edition contents suit your preferences.
Use the figures as dated historical context only. They do not provide a quality score, a current sales ranking or a comparison of lifetime totals on equal terms. For a purchase decision, platform support, story premise, combat style and the content in the edition you are considering are more useful.
