Then use Tuya’s API Explorer to inspect and test requests before building the integration into your application.
What you need before creating a project
You need a Tuya developer account and a clear idea of how your users and devices will be managed. A Tuya cloud project groups devices, API permissions and data assets in an isolated environment. Your choice of development method affects how users are represented, how devices are paired and which application logic you must build.
Tuya says individual and enterprise developers can use Cloud Development. Its cited support policy says mainland-China individual users may need identity verification; users outside mainland China do not have that restriction under that policy. Check the current account requirements in Tuya’s platform before relying on this distinction.
Choose Smart Home PaaS or Custom Development
Choose based on who owns the user model and whether your product uses a Tuya-powered app or its own account and asset logic.

The available API families depend on the products you subscribe to and authorize for the project; the choice of development method is not a substitute for checking each product’s permissions.
Create and configure the cloud project
- Sign in and open Cloud Development. In Tuya’s IoT Development Platform, go to the Cloud Development section.
- Create a project. Set its name, industry, development method and data center. Choose Smart Home PaaS or Custom Development according to the comparison above.
- Select the data center for your deployment. Tuya’s detailed guide lists China, US, Europe and India endpoints. Match the project to where the devices are deployed, and check current project documentation for the endpoint and region available to you before implementation; regions and endpoints can change.
- Subscribe to the cloud products you need. Select products that cover the functions your application will call, then authorize the project to use them. A project does not automatically have permission to call every Tuya API.
- Inspect and test requests in API Explorer. Use the explorer to review request parameters and debug calls before wiring them into application code. Device debugging, virtual connected devices and error-code lookup are also among Tuya’s developer tools.
Tuya’s Cloud Development documentation describes the purpose of this setup plainly: “Create a project on the Cloud Development section inside IoT Development Platform to obtain permission to call the APIs.”

Build the integration and connect devices
After configuring permissions, implement authentication and the OpenAPI calls your application needs. Tuya’s support workflow also describes creating an SDK or schema where applicable, developing the business logic, testing, and publishing after the integration is ready.
For integrations that require app-based pairing, devices are paired and activated through a Tuya-powered app or an app built with Tuya’s App SDK. Pairing is distinct from cloud API authorization: confirm that both the app flow and the project’s subscribed cloud products support the actions your integration requires.

Keep cloud credentials on a trusted server rather than exposing them in a public client app, and test error handling as well as successful API calls. Use Tuya’s error-code lookup when a request fails, and verify that the project is authorized for the relevant product before treating an authorization error as a device problem.
What Cloud Development can do
- Manage devices: Standard APIs cover device registration, activation, control and removal.
- Build smart scenarios: Conditions involving devices, time or environment can trigger actions across devices.
- Process data and events: Analytics APIs and real-time message subscriptions can support storage, monitoring and downstream processing.
- Add industry services: Tuya’s cloud-services index lists extensions including OTA, email, push, weather, location, infrared, body-fat scales, smart locks and video-related APIs. Availability and permissions depend on the relevant service.
For device-to-cloud connectivity at larger scale, Tuya describes network modules, TuyaOS Link SDK and edge gateways. Tuya IoT Core states a 99.9% availability target and support for several hundred million devices; these are vendor claims, not a guarantee for a particular project. Confirm service limits and terms for the plan you select.

Understand trials and edition-specific pricing
Free access is not a single platform-wide allowance. Trial eligibility and paid limits vary by service and edition, so check the billing console for the project and product you plan to use.

Plan rules, quotas, prices and trial terms can change. Treat the billing console and current product documentation as authoritative for a new project rather than assuming a trial or SDK allowance carries over to another service.

Before you move an integration into production
- Confirm the selected development method matches the app’s account model and device-pairing flow.
- Verify the project’s data center against the devices’ deployment region and use the currently documented endpoint.
- Check that each required cloud product is both subscribed to and authorized for the project.
- Test the required API calls, device activation and error handling before publishing.
- Review current service limits, trial eligibility and billing terms for the specific products in use.
