To run NCache for a Java application in Docker, start with an Alachisoft NCache server container, register it for the license mode you need, create a cache, and connect to it with the NCache Java client. The workflow is straightforward, but the correct Java Edition image tag and current Maven coordinates must be confirmed in Alachisoft’s edition-specific instructions; the general Docker examples alone do not establish either.

How the Docker and Java pieces fit together

Docker runs the NCache server. Your Java application runs separately—on the host, another container, or another machine—and uses the NCache Java client to connect to that server. Alachisoft’s Java Edition demonstration covers server setup, cluster creation, client configuration, cluster testing, workstation setup, and application use. Its Maven distribution includes Java client and related Spring and Hibernate packages, but use current package instructions rather than copying versions from an older demonstration: Alachisoft’s NCache Java Edition demonstration.

A Docker container can serve as a server in this arrangement, while Docker may also be used on a development workstation. The exact current Java Edition container tag and Java SDK configuration are not established in the available edition-specific material, so verify them before adopting the commands or configuration below.

Check prerequisites and choose the image

Use a supported Docker host

Alachisoft’s deployment overview supports NCache Docker images on Linux-based environments. Before proceeding, confirm Docker is available and responding:

docker version

Review the image metadata for the specific tag you intend to use. The Docker Hub listing reports Ubuntu 24.04 as the image base, while Alachisoft’s installation guide discusses a Dockerfile based on Ubuntu 22.04. That difference makes it important to check the selected tag’s current metadata rather than assume every NCache image uses the same base: NCache on Docker Hub and Alachisoft Docker installation guide.

Confirm the Java Edition tag

The general Docker guide shows alachisoft/ncache:latest as an example and recommends a version-specific tag for production. It does not establish that latest is the correct Java Edition tag. Find the current Java Edition-specific image/tag in Alachisoft’s documentation or image listing, then pin an appropriate version for a repeatable deployment. Do not treat the generic example below as a confirmed Java Edition tag.

Create and start the container

After confirming the selected tag and edition, the general NCache Docker guide demonstrates this host-network workflow:

  1. Pull the selected image. The guide’s generic example is docker pull alachisoft/ncache:latest; substitute the verified Java Edition tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Create a container using the verified image. The guide’s example is docker create --name ncache --network host alachisoft/ncache:latest.

  3. Start the container with docker start ncache.

These are general NCache Docker examples, not confirmation of a current Java Edition-specific tag. Consult the Docker installation instructions for the current procedure and edition before using them.

Understand host networking

Alachisoft recommends host networking for NCache Docker deployments: the container shares the host’s network interfaces and does not need explicit port mappings. The vendor says bridge networking is not recommended for production deployments. Host networking can simplify client connectivity, but it also means the container uses the host network environment; assess that trade-off against your isolation and network-management requirements. Follow your environment’s security policies when exposing the host to clients.

Register NCache before using it

Alachisoft’s Docker workflow requires registering the container before use. Registration can be done from a host terminal or from inside the container. Choose an evaluation key or purchased license as applicable, and select the registration mode that fits the intended use. Cache Server is the default registration mode; Dev/QA is available for development evaluation. Confirm current license terms and registration steps in the Docker installation guide and Docker deployment overview.

Dev/QA is limited standalone development mode

Dev/QA is for development and testing, not a multi-node cluster. Alachisoft’s current Docker deployment overview lists these limits:

  • Up to 2 remote clients.

  • Up to 3 caches with a combined maximum size of 2 GB.

  • 25 requests per second per local cache.

  • 200,000 remote-cache requests over the lifetime of each Dev/QA licensed client.

These are product and license constraints, not performance estimates. For clustered or production use, review Cache Server licensing and the deployment requirements with Alachisoft.

Create a cache and configure the Java client

Once the container is registered and the NCache service is available, create or configure a cache using the procedure for your selected NCache edition and version. Configure the Java client with the reachable address of the NCache server. Ensure that the address is appropriate from the application’s network location: a host name or address usable on the Docker host may not resolve the same way from another container or remote machine.

The Java Edition demonstration shows client setup and application use, but does not establish current Java Edition configuration-file paths, SDK instructions, or Maven artifact coordinates and versions. Follow Alachisoft’s current NCache Java client instructions for the applicable release rather than guessing dependency coordinates.

Alachisoft’s Getting Started material for NCache Open Source provides configuration examples, but those examples are Open Source-specific. Do not assume an Open Source config.ncconf or client.ncconf example applies unchanged to Java Edition; verify its applicability against the Java Edition instructions: NCache Open Source Getting Started.

Validate the connection

Test the deployment in increasing scope so a failure is easier to locate:

  1. Check the container and NCache service state using the relevant commands or management tools documented for your selected image and version.

  2. Confirm the cache is available and that the Java client can reach the server address configured for the application.

  3. Run a basic Java cache operation or an Alachisoft sample: connect, write a test value, read it back, and remove it.

  4. Only after basic operations work, run optional stress or performance tests. The Java Edition demonstration includes a stress test, but its demonstration throughput is not a benchmark or expected result for your hardware, network, cache configuration, or license mode.
