GitHub Actions runs the compiled workflow, while the selected AI engine determines which credentials you need. Agentic Workflows are in public preview and subject to change, so check the current GitHub Docs before relying on specific commands or configuration.
What GitHub Agentic Workflows do
GitHub Agentic Workflows let you describe repository automations in Markdown and choose a coding agent to carry them out. Each workflow has YAML frontmatter for settings such as triggers, permissions, allowed outputs, and engine, followed by natural-language instructions for the agent. The gh-aw GitHub CLI extension compiles that Markdown source into a GitHub Actions workflow file ending in .lock.yml.
GitHub Actions executes the compiled workflow. You keep and review both the human-authored Markdown file and the generated workflow file in your repository. For an overview, see GitHub’s introduction to Agentic Workflows.
Choose a first workflow: prebuilt or custom
Fastest route: add a prebuilt workflow
GitHub’s quickstart uses a prebuilt daily repository status workflow. The wizard checks repository prerequisites and asks you to select an AI engine. It is an example to get a first run going, not a recommendation that every repository needs daily status automation. GitHub estimates about 10 minutes for that tutorial; this is an estimate for the example, not a general setup guarantee.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Make sure you have a repository where you can write and GitHub Actions is enabled.
- Install and authenticate GitHub CLI, then install the extension using the commands below.
- Run
gh aw add-wizard githubnext/agentics/daily-repo-statusfrom the repository context and follow the prompts to choose an engine. - Review the added workflow and its permissions, then run it using its configured trigger, GitHub’s Actions interface, or a supported GitHub CLI command.
Follow GitHub’s Agentic Workflows quickstart for the prebuilt path.
Custom route: author a workflow in your repository
- Initialize the repository for Agentic Workflows with
gh aw init. - Create a Markdown workflow file with YAML frontmatter and instructions. You can use a coding agent or VS Code in the repository context to draft it.
- Compile it with
gh aw compile, then inspect both the Markdown source and generated.lock.ymlfile. - Commit both files. If you later change the frontmatter, compile again before committing so the generated workflow reflects the configuration.
See GitHub’s workflow creation guide for authoring details. For example, GitHub’s tutorial demonstrates a pull-request reviewer that runs when a pull request is opened or updated and leaves a review.

GitHub says Agentic Workflows run in firewalled containers with read-only tokens by default. Write operations are limited to declared safe outputs, and GitHub documents agentic threat detection. These are design controls, not a guarantee that a particular workflow is risk-free.

Before committing or enabling a workflow, inspect its Markdown frontmatter and compiled .lock.yml. Confirm that its triggers, permissions, and allowed outputs match the task, and understand what changes it can make. GitHub describes these controls in its Agentic Workflows overview.
What to expect from preview status
GitHub Docs identifies Agentic Workflows as a public preview and says they are subject to change. Treat commands, supported engines, and authentication steps as version-sensitive; if a setup step differs from the documentation here, follow GitHub’s current quickstart and creation guide.
