The shortest path is to create a provider session, connect with your framework over CDP (Playwright) or WebDriver (Selenium), then verify one simple interaction before adding your full test or workflow.
What cloud browser automation is—and when to use it
A cloud browser is a browser instance running in a provider’s hosted environment. Your local script or CI job connects to it and issues browser commands; the provider operates the browser infrastructure. This avoids having to run and scale that infrastructure on your own machine or servers. It does not remove the need to write reliable automation: locators, waits, authentication, cleanup, and useful diagnostics still matter.
Cloud sessions are useful when you need browsers or devices beyond the machines available to your team, parallel test execution, or a hosted runtime that can be reached from CI. A service’s specific browser coverage, concurrency, network access, and debugging features vary, so check those against your workload before committing.
Choose a framework and a hosted service
Playwright or Selenium
Playwright is a modern browser automation and testing framework; Selenium is a WebDriver-based alternative. Browserbase publishes official quickstarts for both. Playwright can connect to hosted browsers using the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), while Selenium uses WebDriver sessions. The provider’s framework-specific quickstart is the right place to confirm the supported connection method and session options.

Playwright also requires browser binaries compatible with the installed Playwright version. Its documentation covers Chromium, WebKit, Firefox, branded Chrome and Edge, and emulated tablet and mobile devices. Install browsers with the Playwright CLI and keep the framework and browser binaries updated together: Playwright browser documentation.
Browserbase and BrowserStack Automate
Browserbase is a general-purpose hosted browser runtime. Its documentation highlights connecting existing Playwright scripts with minimal code changes, autoscaling to hundreds of concurrent browsers, session recording for visual replay, verified access features, and usage-based pricing. Browserbase reports infrastructure running 35m+ sessions a month; the accessed product page does not state a year, so treat that as a time-sensitive vendor claim, not an independently dated statistic. BrowserStack Automate emphasizes cloud execution across browsers and mobile devices, CI and Local Testing support, and parallel test runs. Its documentation describes debugging artifacts that include logs, video, network data, and text. BrowserStack says Playwright can run across over 100 browser versions; the accessed support page does not state a year, so verify current coverage directly. These services serve different priorities rather than a universal winner: consider programmable session control and elastic capacity against broad cross-browser/device testing, CI or local-network needs, and the artifacts your team uses to debug failures. Compare framework and API support, authentication, concurrency, deployment model, security and data-residency requirements, and current pricing and limits before selecting a provider.

Self-hosted deployment
BrowserStack documents an Automate self-hosted solution deployable on AWS, Azure, or GCP. Its described capabilities include automated browser updates, utilization metrics, framework integrations, and CI compatibility. A self-hosted deployment may be relevant when infrastructure or data-control requirements dictate where browsers run; check the provider’s current deployment documentation for availability and requirements: BrowserStack self-hosted Automate.
First working cloud session with Playwright
Provider-specific credentials, endpoint formats, and session capabilities differ, so start from the provider’s current Playwright quickstart rather than assuming a universal connection URL. Browserbase’s documented quickstart creates a cloud session, connects over CDP, navigates to a site, interacts with the page, and extracts content: Browserbase Playwright quickstart.
- Install Playwright and matching browser binaries. Add Playwright to your project and install the browsers for that version using the Playwright CLI. Do not assume a locally installed browser is a compatible substitute.
- Create a provider account and API credentials. Store credentials in environment variables or your CI secret store; do not commit them to source control.
- Start a remote browser session. Use the provider’s documented API or SDK, and retain the returned connection endpoint and any session identifier needed for cleanup or diagnostics.
- Connect over CDP. Use the provider’s documented Playwright connection method. A typical flow is to connect to the remote browser, open a page, navigate to a deterministic URL, and wait for a specific page condition.
- Make one assertion. Check a known title, URL, or heading. One small assertion proves the full path—credentials, networking, session creation, browser control, and page load—before you build out a larger workflow.
- Close the session. Use the provider’s documented cleanup call or close the browser connection, so failed and successful test runs do not leave unnecessary sessions open.
For example, the core Playwright operation after establishing the provider connection should remain simple and deterministic:

Connecting Selenium to a remote browser
Selenium controls hosted sessions through the provider’s WebDriver endpoint. Browserbase publishes a Selenium quickstart; follow it for the current endpoint, capabilities, and credential format rather than reusing a Playwright CDP URL: Browserbase Selenium quickstart.
- Install Selenium and the language binding used by your project.
- Read the provider’s Selenium setup guide and create its required credentials.
- Configure a remote WebDriver session with the provider’s endpoint and capabilities.
- Navigate to a known page, wait for a stable element, and assert its text or page title.
- Call the driver’s quit/cleanup method in a
finallyblock so the remote session is released even if an assertion fails.
WebDriver capabilities and browser-version availability are provider-specific. Confirm the exact supported capability names and versions in current documentation; a local Selenium configuration is not necessarily valid for a hosted grid.
Make cloud automation reliable
Use stable checks and bounded waits
- Prefer accessible roles, labels, or stable test identifiers over brittle selectors tied to layout or generated class names.
- Wait for the specific element or state the next action depends on. Fixed delays are slower and less reliable when page load times vary.
- Use bounded retries only for transient conditions. Retrying a deterministic assertion failure can hide a real regression.
- Start with a deterministic page and one assertion; add authentication and dynamic interactions after that path is proven.
Collect artifacts and clean up
When a remote run fails, capture the evidence the provider makes available. Browserbase documents session recording for visual replay. BrowserStack documents video, text, console, and network artifacts. These can help distinguish an application defect from a timeout, blocked request, or unexpected browser state. Ensure session cleanup runs on both success and failure.
Add CI and network access deliberately
After the local proof of concept succeeds, move credentials into CI secrets and test the provider connection from the same network context as the job. If the target application is private or behind a firewall, verify the provider’s documented local-network connectivity option; BrowserStack positions Local Testing as part of Automate. Do not assume a hosted browser can reach internal addresses by default.

Common failures and fixes
Connection fails before a page opens
Check that the endpoint, credentials, and connection protocol match the provider guide. A CDP connection string is not a WebDriver endpoint, and expired or incorrectly scoped credentials can prevent session creation. Confirm outbound network access from the machine or CI runner.
Browser launch or version mismatch
For Playwright, update the package and install its corresponding browser binaries with the Playwright CLI. If a failure occurs only on a particular browser version, verify that the provider supports the requested version rather than assuming local and cloud environments match.
Element not found or intermittent timeout
Check whether the locator identifies the intended element and whether the page is waiting for the right state. Replace arbitrary sleeps with an explicit wait for a visible or actionable element. For content rendered after navigation, wait for that content rather than treating the initial document response as proof the page is ready.
Tests pass locally but fail in the cloud
Compare browser and viewport settings, authentication, network access, timezone, and the target’s behavior in the remote environment. Use the provider’s recording or logs to see what the browser actually received. A local-only network route or session cookie will not automatically exist in a cloud session.

Sessions remain open after failures
Put cleanup in a guaranteed execution path, such as finally, and use the provider’s session lifecycle guidance. Keep retries bounded so a failing test does not create an unbounded stream of new sessions.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
Hosted browsers move browser installation and scaling off your infrastructure, but each session still has startup, navigation, and application-rendering time. Parallelism can shorten a suite only when the provider’s concurrency allowance, your test data, and the application can support it. Autoscaling claims and concurrency limits are product-specific; verify the current terms before estimating capacity.
Usage-based pricing and subscription pricing can lead to different costs for bursty versus steady workloads. Compare the billing unit, treatment of failed sessions, concurrency limits, recording retention, and included browser/device coverage on the provider’s current pricing page. Prices and limits change; the accessed feature documentation alone does not establish a current price comparison.

Yes, provided the CI runner can reach the provider endpoint and its credentials are stored securely. For private applications, confirm the service’s documented local-network connectivity support.
