For new users following Adobe’s current setup instructions, “ColdFusion Builder” means the Adobe ColdFusion Builder extension for Visual Studio Code—not the older Eclipse-based ColdFusion Builder IDE. This guide covers the VS Code extension. Its basic setup is to install the extension, configure Java, connect a ColdFusion server, and create a workspace and project. The extension provides development tools; it does not install the server that runs your application.

Choose the right ColdFusion Builder

Adobe’s current getting-started guide is for the VS Code extension. Older Adobe help covers a separate, Eclipse-based Builder application. These are different setups: do not apply the extension’s VS Code or Java prerequisites to the legacy Eclipse IDE. If you are following current Adobe guidance, use the VS Code extension and its extension guide. For the older application, consult Adobe’s legacy ColdFusion Builder documentation.

Check the extension’s stated prerequisites

Adobe’s extension guide lists the following requirements and recommendations. They reflect the guide’s stated compatibility, not a guarantee that every current configuration is supported; check Adobe’s live system requirements before installing because platform and version support can change.

  • Operating system: Windows 10 or Windows 11, or macOS 11 or macOS 12.
  • Java: Java 11 is the recommended JDK.
  • Editor: Visual Studio Code 1.68 or later.

Install and configure the VS Code extension

  1. Install the extension: Open Visual Studio Code, select the Extensions view, search for “Adobe ColdFusion Builder extension for Visual Studio Code,” open its details page, and install it. Adobe also documents using the Command Palette’s “Install Extension” command.
  2. Configure Java: Follow Adobe’s instructions to set JAVA_HOME for your operating system. Use the Windows or macOS steps that match your computer, then verify the variable with the usual environment-variable or shell tools for that platform.
  3. Connect a ColdFusion server: Open the CF Servers panel and add a server using Adobe’s connection instructions. This connects the editor workflow to a ColdFusion runtime; installing the extension alone does not install a server.
  4. Create a workspace and project: If no workspace is open, create one before adding a project. Use Project Manager to organize the project’s resources, including CFML pages, components, and interfaces.

For exact extension and server setup screens, follow Adobe’s VS Code extension guide, which was last updated May 18, 2026.

Know what Builder does—and what it does not

Adobe describes the extension as a development and workflow tool with code assistance for CFML, CFScript, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS; project and file management; refactoring; debugging; server management; and security scanning. These are Adobe-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature fits every project or configuration.

Builder is not the ColdFusion runtime. Adobe says CFML pages are text files that can be written in any text editor, while recommending its VS Code extension for development. To run an application, you still need an appropriate ColdFusion server and its configuration.

Plan for the server and database separately

Adobe’s 2025 FAQ names WildFly, Apache Tomcat, and JBoss as examples of supported Java EE application servers, and Apache Derby, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL as examples of supported databases. These examples are not a complete compatibility matrix. Check Adobe’s current system support matrix for requirements specific to your ColdFusion release and versions before choosing or connecting a runtime or database.

Adobe’s FAQ also says the ColdFusion 2025 release is subscription-based, with no perpetual license available for that release, and that it can be purchased from Adobe or its partners and resellers. That is server-product licensing information, not a separate license statement for the Builder extension; verify current terms directly with Adobe.

Where to learn what to do next

Once the extension, Java configuration, server connection, and project are in place, use Adobe’s learning and product documentation for the task you want to tackle. Adobe’s FAQ addresses “How Can I Learn to Develop Web Applications with the 2025 Release of Adobe ColdFusion?” and “Do I Need to Know Java to Use Adobe ColdFusion?” It also identifies the ColdFusion FAQ as a reference. For extension-specific steps, return to the extension guide; Adobe’s user-guide index was last updated September 15, 2026.
